Dell Computer
Rebate ripoff

On June 25, I purchased a computer and printer from Dell. The sales associate said if I made the purchase on that day I would get a rebate of $30 on the printer and $100 on the computer. I agreed to purchase the computer and I was set up with an account with 90 days without interest on June 25. The sales rep immediately emailed me the rebate forms. The printer rebate was out of date. I emailed her and she said she would send me the correct form. She, in turn, emailed me the same out of date form.

When my computer arrived a week later, the enclosed packing slip incorrectly stated the the computer was ordered on June 26, one day too late to qualify for the $100 computer rebate. I immediately started trying to get this corrected. Everyone I called told me to call someone else. I emailed and called Dell constantly. Some days I would stay on the phone hours trying to get this rebate matter cleared up.

Anytime I talked with a real person instead of a machine, I specifically stated that I wanted to pay the bill before 90 days so I would not be charged finance charges. I needed to know if I would be getting a rebate check or a credit so I could pay the bill. Eventually, I was told someone would get back with me. They never did.

I contacted the Better Business Bureau and they contacted Dell. Someone from Dell called me and told me that a credit for the amount of the rebate would be added to my account on my next statement. When I received the next bill the credit was not added but instead finance charges were added. At this point, I sent a check for the computer minus the amount of the rebate and finance charges with a letter of explanation.

On the next statement the credit for the rebate had been added, but I was still being charged for the finance charges and late fees. They have now turned the matter over to collections. When the collections people call they all listen to my story and agree that I have not been treated fairly and give me a number to call which leads to a recorded message and the run around again.
