Dell complaints: returns, warranty, support, orders and financing (checked October 16, 2026)

This page is about Dell Technologies Inc. and its operating subsidiary Dell Inc., the company that sells Dell, XPS, Inspiron, Latitude and Alienware PCs, monitors and accessories through Dell.com. Dell Financial Services (financing) is a related business, and VMware has been a separate company since its spin-off on November 1, 2021; neither is the subject of this page.

Where to start. Dell's US contact page (opened 2026-10-16) offers 'Contact Technical Support', 'Chat with sales', 'Check your orders ... Contact Order Support' and a sales line, 1-877-275-3355 (home hours listed as 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT, all days; business hours listed as 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT, Monday to Saturday). The page lists sales chat as available 24 hours on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. CT on weekends. In the page text read on 2026-10-16 no separate technical-support phone number is printed; technical support is reached through the page's 'Contact Technical Support' option. Have the order number or the Service Tag ready.

Returns. Dell's returns page says the return policy is '30 days from the date of your invoice' and that you must start the return within that time. If approved you receive a credit return authorization (CRA) number; the page says a product returned without one 'will be considered an unauthorized return'. Per the page, Dell will not charge a re-stocking fee if the product is defective, if Dell made an error, or if you are a consumer who bought for personal use; for other returns it may charge 15 percent. The exclusions listed include software (with stated exceptions), customized products, gift cards (except where required by law), APEX and non-Dell-branded enterprise products such as servers and storage, Dell Wyse products and non-Dell software. The page says all returns must be made in the same country in which the purchase was made, that Dell sometimes offers promotions that extend the return period, and that purchases not made directly from Dell follow the seller's own policy (for example a retailer's).

Warranty. Dell's consumer warranties page says the applicable limited hardware warranty is identified on your order acknowledgement, invoice or receipt, and that Dell-branded hardware bought in the US or Canada 'may come with a 90-day, 1-year, 2-year, 3-year, 4-year or 5-year, or other limited hardware warranty'. Separately, the Dell Inc profile on BBB carries a company-supplied note (read on 2026-10-16) that 'according to the company, the warranty does not cover software, including the operating system and software added to the Dell-branded hardware products through their factory-integration system'.

Disputes. Dell's Consumer Terms of Sale (marked 'rev. 09MAY2025' on the page) begin: 'PLEASE READ THESE TERMS CAREFULLY! THEY INCLUDE AN ARBITRATION PROVISION REQUIRING INDIVIDUAL ARBITRATION OF DISPUTES INSTEAD OF JURY TRIALS OR CLASS ACTIONS.' The terms say arbitration is administered by the American Arbitration Association under its Consumer Arbitration Rules, that 'Dell will pay the arbitration/arbitrator fees', that you keep the right to bring individual claims in small claims court 'to the extent that you qualify', and that if more than 25 individual arbitration demands are filed by the same or related parties or representatives, the AAA Mass Arbitration Supplementary Rules or JAMS Mass Arbitration Procedures and Guidelines apply. The same terms state that they and any dispute between you and Dell 'will be governed by the laws of the State of Texas'.

Other routes. You can file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (in the entries I opened Dell answered through escalation teams), your state attorney general, and the Federal Trade Commission. For a Dell Pay Credit card account, the card issuer named on Dell's financing site is Comenity Capital Bank, and the CFPB accepts complaints about credit cards. Keep order confirmations, Service Tags, chat transcripts and case numbers.

Regulator actions: CPSC recalls and the 2010 SEC case

CPSC recalls. The CPSC recall database (checked 2026-10-16) lists these recalls announced with or by Dell, each quoted from the CPSC record:

  • 2019-02-06 (No. 19060): Dell hybrid power adapters sold with power banks; about 8,900 sold in the US; hazard: 'The hybrid power adapter casing can break and detach, exposing the internal metal components, posing an electric shock hazard'; remedy: stop using and contact Dell for a free replacement adapter.
  • 2006-08-15 (No. 06231): notebook computer batteries made by Sony Energy Devices Corp.; about 2.7 million battery packs in the US (1.5 million more outside the US); hazard: lithium-ion batteries 'can overheat, posing a fire hazard'; remedy: replacement battery from Dell.
  • 2005-12-16 (No. 06056): notebook batteries; about 22,000 in the US; hazard: batteries can overheat and pose a fire risk; remedy: free replacement battery.
  • 2004-10-08 (No. 05004): AC adapters for Latitude, Precision and Inspiron notebooks; about 990,000; hazard: adapters can overheat, 'posing a risk of fire and electrical shock hazards'; remedy: free replacement adapter.
  • 2004-07-01 (No. 04560): notebook power adapters (P/N W1451); about 28,000; hazard: using power cords not intended for these adapters can pose a shock hazard; remedy: free retrofit kits.
  • 2001-05-03 (No. 01140): Inspiron 5000 and 5000e notebook batteries; about 284,000; hazard: batteries can overcharge, become very hot and possibly catch fire; remedy: stop using and contact Dell for a discount on a future purchase of a new notebook or desktop.
  • 2000-10-13 (No. 01013): batteries for Latitude and Inspiron notebooks; about 27,000; hazard: batteries can short circuit and possibly catch fire; remedy: contact Dell to check whether the battery is included.

To check a current product, search the CPSC recall database by model or contact Dell with the Service Tag. I did not locate a Dell-run recall page on 2026-10-16, so the list above comes only from CPSC. A 1994 CPSC recall of Dell DL-1460NI monitors also appears in the database and is not detailed here.

SEC case (securities, not a consumer matter). On July 22, 2010 the SEC filed SEC v. Dell Inc., Michael S. Dell, Kevin B. Rollins, James M. Schneider and others (D.D.C., 1:10-cv-01245). The SEC alleged that Dell did not disclose large exclusivity payments from Intel and used improper accounting from fiscal 2002 to 2006. According to the SEC release, Dell Inc. 'without admitting or denying the SEC's allegations' consented to an order enjoining future violations and agreed to pay a $100 million penalty; Michael Dell and Kevin Rollins each agreed to pay $4 million; James Schneider, Nicholas Dunning (who agreed to a $50,000 penalty) and Leslie Jackson also settled, without admitting or denying the allegations. This page does not treat it as evidence about product or service quality.

Dell background: who the company is

Dell Technologies Inc. (stock symbol DELL, New York Stock Exchange) has its headquarters at One Dell Way, Round Rock, Texas. Its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 31, 2026 (Note 1) says the company was incorporated in Delaware in January 2013 and changed its jurisdiction of incorporation from Delaware to Texas effective July 1, 2026 pursuant to a plan of conversion; a Form 8-K says the stockholder-approved redomestication became effective on July 1, 2026 at 12:01 a.m. Central Time. Its Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended January 30, 2026 reports total net revenue of $113,538 million and two segments: Infrastructure Solutions Group (servers, storage, networking) and Client Solutions Group, which sells branded PCs, notebooks, desktops, workstations and peripherals. The 10-K says Client Solutions Group offers both commercial and consumer products and that approximately 60 percent of its revenue comes from customers in the Americas. It names Michael S. Dell as Chairman and CEO and says he served as CEO of Dell Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary, from 1984 until July 2004 and again from January 2007.

Financing. The 10-K says Dell Financial Services and its affiliates (DFS) 'originate, collect, and service customer receivables' related to Dell offerings. Dell's financing site (opened 2026-10-16) states that 'Dell Pay Credit Accounts are issued by Comenity Capital Bank'. The BBB profile for Dell Inc carries a company-supplied statement that Dell Inc and Dell Financial Services are separate corporations, that Dell Financial is solely responsible for financing, and that Dell representatives have no authority to act for Dell Financial. Dell's financing page (opened 2026-10-16) also says 'Payment solutions provided and serviced by Dell Financial Services L.L.C. or its affiliate or designee' for qualified customers. Complaints about a credit account therefore go to the account issuer or servicer, not only to Dell's product support.

Related businesses. Alienware is a Dell gaming brand (the 10-K lists the Alienware word mark as material). EMC Corporation was acquired by Dell Technologies in September 2016, and VMware was spun off on November 1, 2021; under the separation agreement each company agreed to indemnify the other for liabilities allocated to it.

Complaint record: BBB, Trustpilot and this site's archive

BBB. The BBB profile for Dell Inc, Round Rock, TX shows an A+ BBB rating and BBB Accredited status (raw page data: accredited since 1989-04-10; file opened 1984-12-01). As displayed on 2026-10-16 the complaints tab reports '2,521 total complaints in the last 3 years' and '734 complaints filed in the last 12 months', and the reviews tab shows 'Average of 338 Customer Reviews' at 1.07 out of 5. BBB notes that customer reviews are not used in the letter grade. Complaints visible on 2026-09-14 to 09-23 covered warranty and repair denials, undelivered or cancelled orders, rewards balances and delayed refunds; Dell's published responses in those entries described reaching out to customers, replacing a monitor, processing a refund and, in some entries, declining further assistance.

Trustpilot. The Trustpilot page for www.dell.com shows 3,663 reviews and a score of 1.3 and is labelled 'Unclaimed profile'. Trustpilot's page says 'This company hasn't invited their customers, so reviews may not be representative' and 'we don't fact-check reviews'.

CFPB. I searched the CFPB consumer complaint database company list for 'Dell' on 2026-10-16 and it returned no company by that name; this says nothing about whether Dell Pay Credit complaints appear under the card issuer's name.

This site's archive. USAComplaints.com holds 526 user-submitted posts that name Dell itself as the subject, dated 2001 to 2014, plus 70 posts linked as related (56 naming Dell Financial Services or an affiliated Dell account, 8 about collection firms or law firms collecting on a Dell Financial account, and 6 about Alienware). They are unverified allegations by visitors, were not checked against Dell's records, and are not combined with the BBB or Trustpilot figures. By simple keyword count across the 526 subject posts: customer or technical support, 357; warranty or repair, 264; orders, shipping or cancellations, 269; defective hardware, 232; financing, Dell Preferred Account or billing, 221; rebates, refunds or returns, 183 (posts can match several). Archive posts about survey or sweepstakes promoters offering a 'free Dell laptop', and about unrelated businesses whose names merely contain the word Dell, are not linked to this page.

Litigation record: the Brazil v. Dell false-pricing class action

Brazil v. Dell Inc. (N.D. Cal., 5:07-cv-01700) was filed on March 23, 2007 as a putative class action. In a July 2008 order on Dell's motion to dismiss the first amended complaint, the court described the plaintiffs' claims as advertising of false discounts from false former prices, false 'free' offers and false rebate discounts for Dell computers and products, bought through Dell's website; the court found Texas law applied and gave plaintiffs leave to amend. On the CourtListener docket, the court preliminarily approved a class settlement on July 15, 2011, and a 'FINAL ORDER AND JUDGMENT' was entered on October 28, 2011; an objector's appeal was dismissed on June 29, 2012. The settlement's terms are not stated in the docket text I opened, so none are given here.

Other. The 10-K's Legal Matters note (fiscal year ended January 30, 2026) describes the company as involved in consumer, antitrust, tax, intellectual-property and other matters in the ordinary course, and identifies one specific case: an ERISA class action over the Dell 401(k) plan, Lowbruck v. Dell Technologies Inc. (W.D. Tex., filed January 28, 2026), which Dell says it intends to defend vigorously. It is an employee-benefits case, not a customer case. A second matter appears on the W.D. Tex. docket for Lattimore v. Dell, Inc. (1:24-cv-00499, filed May 10, 2024): the docket shows Dell moved to compel arbitration and to dismiss on September 4, 2024, plaintiffs filed a notice of voluntary dismissal on November 18, 2024, and the court entered an order closing the case on November 20, 2024. The docket text does not state the claims, and this page does not characterize them.

Is Dell Legitimate?

Dell Technologies Inc. files annual and quarterly reports with the SEC (most recent 10-K for the fiscal year ended January 30, 2026, filed March 16, 2026; most recent 10-Q filed September 8, 2026), lists its Class C common stock on the New York Stock Exchange, and gives a corporate address and telephone number on the 10-K cover. BBB lists Dell Inc as accredited since 1989 with an A+ rating and, on the same profile, 2,521 complaints in the last 3 years; Trustpilot shows an unclaimed profile with a score of 1.3 from 3,663 reviews. Those figures measure different things and are not combined. A purchase on dell.com falls under Dell's Consumer Terms of Sale; items bought from retailers or third-party sellers follow the seller's terms. Archive posts that allege a 'free Dell laptop' offer or a support firm posing as Dell concern other businesses, not Dell itself.
