Best Buy returns, price match, protection plans, membership cancellation and how to complain: Best Buy's own pages (checked October 6, 2026)
Best Buy's own pages, read on October 6, 2026, set out the routes below. Most of the 1,864 Best Buy posts in this site's archive were written between 2002 and 2013, so they describe older rebates, store credit cards and warranty practices rather than today's terms.
Returns. The Return & Exchange Policy (it states “Effective date: February 23, 2026”) gives most products 15 days for standard customers and 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total members (Marketplace products excluded from the extended window); activatable devices such as cell phones have 14 days (Verizon devices 30 days). It lists a $45 restocking fee for activatable devices (excluding prepaid phones) and 15% for categories including drones, digital cameras, camcorders and projectors, with no restocking fee in AL, CO, HI, IA, MS, OH, OK and SC or where prohibited by law. The policy says an item shipped from and sold by Best Buy on BestBuy.com may be returned at any Best Buy store or by prepaid label (major appliances and TVs over 50 inches excluded); for Marketplace Seller products it says “many items” shipped to the customer may be returned at a Best Buy store, that size and product limitations may prevent a store from accepting a return, and that the product is returned to the seller through a prepaid label from the customer's account; the policy says returns lacking proof of purchase may be store credit only. The policy's phone number is 1-888-BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289).
Price match. The Price Match Guarantee page (“Effective date: September 2, 2026”) says BestBuy.com requests are handled by online chat or phone and store requests at the Customer Service desk, during the purchase or the return and exchange period. It states that “BestBuy.com price match requests cannot be completed in our stores or via email.” It says Marketplace prices are not matched and lists exclusions, including free-gift-with-purchase offers, financing offers, competitor coupons and membership prices for non-members.
Protection plans. Best Buy's plan-terms page tells customers to find their plan by name and purchase date at BestBuy.com/PlanTerms. A notice on bestbuy.com about Geek Squad Protection says “Effective December 8, 2025, your plan's Obligor and Administrator will be Assurant” (Federal Warranty Service Corporation in most states, United Service Protection, Inc. in Florida, Assurant Service Protection, Inc. in Oklahoma), and that customers “will continue to reach out to Best Buy directly for support.” The membership page states that Best Buy Product Protection, Inc. is the obligor and administrator of coverage under Best Buy Protection plans.
Memberships. The membership page lists My Best Buy Plus at $29.99 per year and My Best Buy Total at $199.99 per year, both renewing automatically, and says: “Cancel any time by calling 1-888-BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289) or online on your account Plans and Subscriptions page (BestBuy.com/Services/PlanList).” It adds that canceling a membership cancels any remaining months of protection plans attached to it. Best Buy's membership FAQ says that cancelling within the first 60 days of the initial purchase or a renewal term earns a refund of the amount paid minus the value of membership discounts or benefits already provided, and that cancelling after 60 days earns a prorated refund for the days remaining in the billing year, minus benefits already provided.
Cancelling an order. Best Buy's cancel-order page says: “You can cancel items as long as we haven't started the shipping process.” It lists different timeframes by delivery method: store pickup orders can be cancelled any time (items are held for 5 days), scheduled home delivery or installation is cancelled by calling 1-888-BEST BUY one day before the appointment, backorders can be cancelled while still on backorder, and pre-orders have their own timeframes. If it is too late to cancel, the page points to the Return Options button on the order.
Recalls. Best Buy's Product Recalls page lists a Recall Hotline, 1-800-566-7498, and recalls announced by Best Buy itself (see the regulator section for the CPSC details). Product incidents can also be reported at SaferProducts.gov. A CPSC recall notice for Best Buy (the July 2026 Insignia gas ranges recall) says that anyone experiencing issues with a recall remedy, or who believes a company is not responding to a remedy request, can use CPSC's Recall Complaint form and explain the situation to CPSC.
If a dispute is not resolved. Options are the BBB complaint form on Best Buy's BBB profile, your state attorney general, and the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For a My Best Buy credit card, Best Buy's payment page names Citibank, N.A. as the card issuer, and complaints about a credit card can be submitted to the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint.
Prize-text messages. This archive also holds hundreds of 2012 and 2013 reports of unsolicited text messages offering a $1,000 Best Buy gift card and pointing to websites with names other than bestbuy.com. Those reports describe messages from other websites, so they are not counted as complaints about Best Buy's own conduct on this page. Best Buy's official website is bestbuy.com.
Best Buy state consumer-protection judgments and product recalls
Connecticut Attorney General, State of Connecticut v. Best Buy Co., Inc., et al. (Docket X07-CV-07-4030564-S). The State alleged that Best Buy's in-store kiosks displayed a look-alike “Kiosk Website” with higher in-store prices instead of BestBuy.com prices, violating the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act. CT Watchdog, which reprints the stipulated judgment (published December 14, 2010), reports that the court approved a settlement under which Best Buy pays Connecticut $399,000 and offers restitution to consumers who, between November 1, 2001 and March 8, 2007, bought a product at a Connecticut store at a price higher than the BestBuy.com price they saw after viewing the kiosk site, in the amount of the price difference. The judgment states it was entered “without any admission by the Defendants of any wrongdoing.” The settlement notice in the judgment says Best Buy denied the allegations.
California District Attorneys, 2013. A California Department of Food and Agriculture notice (March 7, 2013) says a final judgment by stipulation was filed on February 22, 2013 against Best Buy Stores, L.P. by the Riverside County District Attorney with the San Diego City and Los Angeles County District Attorneys for overcharging customers (Business and Professions Code section 12024.2). It says Best Buy was ordered to pay $875,370, made up of $600,000 in civil penalties, $175,370 in agency costs and $100,000 in cy pres restitution, and to run a five-year “Pricing Accuracy Program” under which, per the judgment text, an overcharged customer receives a $3 reduction from the lowest posted or advertised price, or the item free when that price is $3 or less.
California District Attorneys, 2021. Riverside County District Attorney's release of February 16, 2021 says the Riverside, Alameda, Santa Barbara and San Diego District Attorneys settled a consumer-protection action against Best Buy Stores that alleged misrepresented prices, failure to disclose material aspects of the return policy, and violation of the 2013 injunction (missing checkout signage). The final judgment was filed in Riverside County Superior Court (case CVRI2000477) and signed by Judge Irma Asberry. “Without admitting liability,” Best Buy agreed to pay $558,570 in civil costs and penalties and $75,000 in restitution, and to institute a renewed pricing accuracy program and enhanced disclosures of return policies. The San Diego District Attorney's release adds that Best Buy had not disclosed that a third party, The Retail Equation, monitored purchases and decided whether a California consumer could return or exchange an item, and that Best Buy “discontinued the use of The Retail Equation's services in April 2018, after meeting with prosecutors.”
Product recalls announced by Best Buy (CPSC). CPSC's recall database lists these recalls with Best Buy Purchasing LLC as importer, using CPSC's own descriptions:
- July 9, 2026, Insignia gas ranges (models NS-RGFGSS1 and NS-RGFCGS2; about 3,820 sold in the U.S.): front-mounted knobs “can be activated accidentally by humans or pets, posing a risk of serious injury from a fire hazard”; the firm reported one report of accidental activation and no injuries. Remedy: free knob covers via recallrtr.com/range.
- March 14, 2024, Insignia air fryers and air fryer ovens (about 187,400 in the U.S.): overheating handles or shattering door glass; 24 reports including six fires, no injuries reported. Remedy: refund by check or Best Buy store credit.
- October 26, 2023, Insignia pressure cookers (about 930,000): incorrect fill markings on the inner pot; 31 incidents including 17 burn injuries reported. Remedy: free replacement inner pot and pressure-signaling valve from Best Buy.
- September 14, 2023, Insignia and Yardbird fire tables with lava rocks (about 1,490): lava rocks can split and eject. Remedy: free replacement fill of fire-safe glass beads.
- April 21, 2022, Insignia air fryers and air fryer ovens (about 635,000 in the U.S.): fire and burn hazards; 68 U.S. reports and two injuries reported. Remedy: credit of $50 or the receipt amount if higher.
CPSC's database also lists earlier Best Buy-announced recalls from 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013, and a June 5, 2025 Midea window air conditioner recall that includes two Insignia models. Check the model number against the recall page before assuming a product is covered; most products on bestbuy.com are not recalled.

Best Buy consumer lawsuits
Pending 2026 class-action complaints. Two proposed class actions filed in 2026 allege that Best Buy advertises discounts against inflated reference prices. Tanner v. Best Buy Co., Inc. (N.D. Cal., No. 3:26-cv-05079, filed May 29, 2026) alleges an “illegal false price-discounting scheme” at Best Buy stores and bestbuy.com on behalf of California purchasers; Morgan v. MN Best Buy Co., Inc. (C.D. Cal., No. 8:26-cv-00836, filed April 6, 2026) alleges that dual-price displays such as “Reg” and “Comp. Value” prices are misleading. These are allegations in complaints; the complaint copies were read, but the court dockets could not be opened on October 6, 2026 (CourtListener and Justia showed human-verification pages), so Best Buy's responses and the current status were not verified.
The state judgments above are listed in the regulator section. Securities, employment and other business-to-business cases are not covered here.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do I have to return something to Best Buy?
Best Buy's Return & Exchange Policy (“Effective date: February 23, 2026”) gives most products 15 days for standard customers and 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total members, with 14 days for activatable devices such as cell phones (30 days for Verizon devices). It lists exceptions, including a $45 restocking fee for activatable devices and 15% for categories such as drones and digital cameras, and says the period starts the day you receive the product. Per the policy, items shipped from and sold by Best Buy may be returned at any Best Buy store or by prepaid label, while Marketplace Seller products follow a separate process (many, not all, may be returned at a store; otherwise by prepaid label to the seller); 1-888-BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289) is the number the policy gives.
How does Best Buy's price match work?
Per the Price Match Guarantee page (“Effective date: September 2, 2026”), a request is made during the purchase or the return and exchange period: for BestBuy.com orders by online chat or by phone at 1-888-BEST BUY, and for store purchases at the Customer Service desk; the page also states that “BestBuy.com price match requests cannot be completed in our stores or via email.” The page says Marketplace prices are not matched and lists exclusions, including free-gift-with-purchase offers, financing offers, competitors' coupons, services and membership prices for non-members.
How do I cancel My Best Buy Plus or My Best Buy Total?
Best Buy's membership page says: “Cancel any time by calling 1-888-BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289) or online on your account Plans and Subscriptions page (BestBuy.com/Services/PlanList).” It lists Plus at $29.99 per year and Total at $199.99 per year, renewing automatically until cancelled, and states that canceling a membership cancels any remaining months of attached protection plans.
Who is the obligor of Geek Squad Protection plans now?
Best Buy's Geek Squad Protection notice says that effective December 8, 2025 the plan's obligor and administrator will be Assurant (Federal Warranty Service Corporation in most states, United Service Protection, Inc. in Florida, Assurant Service Protection, Inc. in Oklahoma). It says coverage, term, exclusions and service fees remain the same, that customers “will continue to reach out to Best Buy directly for support,” and that plans can be managed or cancelled on the Plans and Subscriptions page or in a store. Plan documents are at BestBuy.com/PlanTerms. Separately, the membership page states that Best Buy Product Protection, Inc. is the obligor of Best Buy Protection plans.

Best Buy's recalls page lists a Recall Hotline, 1-800-566-7498, and each CPSC notice gives the model numbers and remedy; check your model against the notice.
Has Best Buy settled with state authorities over pricing or returns?
The documents quoted on this page record three state judgments: a 2010 Connecticut Attorney General stipulated judgment ($399,000 and restitution, without admission of wrongdoing), a 2013 California judgment ($875,370 and a pricing accuracy program) and a 2021 California judgment ($558,570 in civil costs and penalties plus $75,000 restitution, without admitting liability, over price accuracy and return-policy disclosure).
