HP complaints: warranty, support, Instant Ink, returns and recalls (checked October 14, 2026)

This page is about HP Inc., the company that sells HP and Compaq-branded PCs, printers, ink and toner, and HP.com store orders. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (servers, networking, enterprise services) has been a separate company since November 1, 2015; this page does not cover it.

Where to start. HP's contact page (rendered in a browser on 2026-10-14) says: 'Sign in and identify your product to see available support.' and 'Some contact options require an active warranty.' HP's warranty statement says HP 'may offer 90 days of Complimentary Limited Technical Support by phone without a fee' and that other support methods, including chat and the HP Support website, are available during the whole limited warranty period. You can check a product's warranty status on HP's Check Warranty page using the serial number.

Returns of HP Store orders. HP's Returns & Exchanges page says the return policy is 30 days from the date of delivery for eligible purchases and that returns need an RMA number from the HP Store; it also says returns or exchanges are not accepted for items from the HP Parts Store, Instant Ink, All-In Plan, retailers or HP Technical Support. Items bought from a retailer follow that retailer's policy. The HP Store Terms and Conditions say: 'If you need to cancel your order, you may do so within one hour after placing it, provided the order has not yet entered processing status.'

Return details. The Returns page says a return must be received within 30 days of authorization, that HP will not charge a restocking fee if the returned product is defective or you are a consumer who purchased for personal use, and that purchases for unauthorized resale may carry a restocking fee of up to 15 percent of the price paid. It says to allow up to 5 business days for HP to validate a return, after which a refund may take up to 5 business days to appear on your account. It also says HP Store orders placed with a purchase order or on payment terms are not returnable, and that large format printers are not returnable unless the product is defective or the return results from an HP Store error.

Instant Ink. HP's Instant Ink page says: 'Change or cancel your plan at any time online' and that 'Plan downgrades and cancellations are effective after the last day of the current billing period.' For the Yearly Plan the page's footnote says there is a 'partial refund if cancelled within 30 days' and that a yearly plan cannot be cancelled for a refund after that period. The page also says that 'After 3 months, a monthly fee will be charged automatically unless cancelled'. Its footnote on cancellation says that if you cancel you can use HP original Standard or XL cartridges (and, for non-HP+ printers, third-party cartridges compatible with your printer). For the Yearly Plan it says plans are prepaid at 12 times the monthly rate minus a 10% discount, renew automatically unless cancelled with an option to stop auto-renewal at any time, and that each printer can enroll in and cancel the Yearly Plan up to three times before becoming ineligible; full plan terms are at hpinstantink.com/terms.

Safety recalls. Check your model against HP's recalls page and the CPSC recall listings described below; HP battery and power-cord recalls offer a free replacement. For the 2018 and 2019 notebook and mobile workstation battery program, the CPSC notices direct consumers to www.HP.com/go/batteryprogram2018 to check their battery and to enable 'Battery Safety Mode' if it is included; HP's recalls page says that for batteries affected by its August 2019 expansion HP is releasing a BIOS update 'that will discharge the battery and disable future charging until the battery is replaced', and asks customers to recheck their batteries even if they did so previously.

If HP does not resolve it. Keep order numbers, case numbers, serial numbers and dates. Outside HP you can file a product-safety report at SaferProducts.gov, a consumer complaint with your state attorney general, or a complaint with the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov; a card issuer's dispute process may apply to unauthorized or undelivered purchases.

Product recalls and safety notices involving HP (CPSC listings and HP's own page)

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall database (SaferProducts.gov recall API, queried on 2026-10-14 by title and manufacturer) lists the following HP recalls. A recall is a voluntary corrective action announced with CPSC, not a finding of wrongdoing, and these entries are not court cases. Summaries below follow the CPSC notice text.

  • March 12, 2019 (recall 19079): expansion of the battery recall to about 78,500 more lithium-ion batteries for HP commercial notebook computers and mobile workstations; hazard: batteries 'can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards'; remedy: free battery replacement by an authorized technician; HP reported eight new reports of overheating, melting or charring, including one minor injury and two reports of property damage totaling $1,100.
  • January 4, 2018 (recall 18077): about 50,000 lithium-ion batteries for HP notebook computers and mobile workstations (plus 2,600 sold in Canada); same remedy; HP reported eight reports of battery packs overheating, melting or charring, including three reports of property damage totaling $4,500 and one report of a minor injury (a first degree burn to the hand).
  • January 24, 2017 (recall 17071): expansion to about 101,000 batteries for HP and Compaq notebooks sold between March 2013 and October 2016 (41,000 had been recalled in June 2016); remedy: stop using the battery, remove it and contact HP for a free replacement; use the notebook on AC power until the replacement arrives.
  • June 23, 2016 (recall 16202): about 41,000 HP notebook batteries with Panasonic cells; HP had received seven reports of overheating, melting or charring, including about $4,000 in property damage.
  • August 26, 2014 (recall 14262): about 5,577,000 LS-15 AC power cords sold with HP and Compaq notebooks in the U.S. (446,700 in Canada); 29 reports of overheating or melting, with two claims of minor burns and 13 of minor property damage; remedy: free replacement cord.
  • December 17, 2013 (recall 14061): about 145,000 chargers sold with the HP Chromebook 11, announced by Google and HP; remedy: free replacement charger from Google.
  • February 2, 2012 (recall 12101): about 928,000 HP Fax 1040 and 1050 machines in the U.S.; remedy: rebate toward a replacement fax machine or certain inkjet printers.
  • June 27, 2008 (recall 08313): about 367,000 HP Fax 1010 and 1010xi machines; remedy: rebate.

The CPSC database (queried 2026-10-14 by title) also lists, among others, a 1995 recall of Officejet printer-fax-copiers, HP and Compaq notebook battery recalls (2005, 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011), digital cameras (2006), Compaq batteries and adapters (2000, 2001) and a 2005 recall of HP L2035 flat panel monitors announced by Philips; it also lists 2002 recalls of power cords and speaker adapters sold with HP products that were announced by other manufacturers. Dates above are CPSC's; HP's own recalls page gives January 31, 2012 for the HP Fax 1040 and 1050 and June 28, 2008 for the Fax 1010 and 1010xi. HP's own recalls page (opened 2026-10-14) describes the August 2019 and January 2017 battery program expansions, the 2014 AC power cord program and the 2008 and 2012 fax recalls, and says HP 'participates in voluntary recall programs when a defective part is shown to cause a potential safety hazard'. Search the CPSC database with your product model for anything newer than this check.

Who HP Inc. is

HP Inc. is a Delaware corporation based at 1501 Page Mill Road, Palo Alto, California (10-K cover page). Its 10-K for the fiscal year ended October 31, 2025 describes HP as a company that sells 'devices, services and subscriptions for personal computing, printing, 3D printing, hybrid work, gaming and other related technologies' in 'more than 170 countries', with segments Personal Systems, Printing and Corporate Investments, and 'approximately 55,000 employees worldwide' (company statements). Its common stock trades on the NYSE under HPQ.

Relationship to Hewlett Packard Enterprise. The 10-K says that on November 1, 2015 Hewlett-Packard Company 'completed the separation of Hewlett Packard Enterprise', its former enterprise technology infrastructure, software, services and financing businesses. The two companies keep cross-indemnities under a separation agreement, and both retain rights to use variations of the legacy Hewlett-Packard and HP branding. Complaints about servers, enterprise networking or enterprise services that were handled before 2015 by Hewlett-Packard Company may therefore concern the business now run by Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

Compaq. HP's warranty statement says it applies to 'HP-branded and Compaq-branded hardware products'. The CPSC database lists Compaq recalls from 2000 and 2001 under Compaq's own name; archive posts dated before May 2002 that name only Compaq are therefore linked here as non-primary brand mentions, not as posts about HP itself.

Lawsuits and settlements (consumer matters, from court dockets and HP's SEC filings)

Dynamic Security and firmware updates. HP's 10-K says that since 2016 it has been named in civil litigation or government investigations about supplies authentication protocols ('Dynamic Security') in certain printers; the core allegations 'claim misleading or inadequate consumer notifications and permissions' about Dynamic Security, firmware updates, or cartridges with clone chips not working. Two U.S. class actions are documented on court dockets:

  • In re HP Printer Firmware Update Litigation (N.D. Cal., 5:16-cv-05820): the motion for final approval states that the settlement 'prohibits HP from reinstalling or reactivating Dynamic Security in the printers at issue' and 'creates a $1.5 million cash fund', with class counsel separately seeking $2.75 million in fees paid by HP. The docket shows a Final Order and Judgment signed April 25, 2019 (Document 139), which found the settlement 'fair, adequate and reasonable' and dismissed the action with prejudice. On June 28, 2019 the court granted the fee motion in part (Document 146), awarding $1,772,979.95 in fees, plus $83,011.78 in costs and $5,000 to each of five class representatives.
  • Mobile Emergency Housing Corp. v. HP Inc. (N.D. Cal., 5:20-cv-09157): classes of owners of certain HP Color LaserJet Pro printers certified for injunctive relief only. Final order and judgment entered March 18, 2025; the order says the settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing or liability and dismisses the action with prejudice. Plaintiffs' filing states the settlement 'does not include any release of Class Members' claims for monetary relief'. By order of March 18, 2025 (Document 214) the court granted class counsel the requested $725,000 in attorneys' fees and expenses and $5,000 service awards to each of the three class representatives.

HP's 10-Q for the quarter ended July 31, 2026 also reports that a putative class action filed in federal court in Illinois in January 2024 over Dynamic Security firmware updates was dismissed on September 30, 2025 with leave to amend, that an amended complaint was filed, and that the court had set a hearing in August 2026 on HP's motion to dismiss. That is as reported in the 10-Q filed August 27, 2026; no later ruling was identified in the sources checked on 2026-10-14. The same filing says the Dutch Supreme Court on June 5, 2026 rejected competition claims against HP over Dynamic Security.

Other matters HP reports (company filings, not consumer complaints): a customs dispute involving HP India (the 10-Q says the Customs Tribunal's June 29, 2026 decision overturned several duty, interest, penalty and confiscation findings and eliminated all individual penalties, and that HP intends to appeal to the Supreme Court of India), patent suits, and a securities class action and derivative actions about HP's printing supplies business, for which the 10-K reports a preliminarily approved settlement and the 10-Q a derivative settlement preliminarily approved on May 29, 2026 with a final settlement hearing scheduled for September 2026 (as reported in the 10-Q filed August 27, 2026; the outcome of that hearing was not identified in the sources checked on 2026-10-14). Read the Litigation and Contingencies note in the latest 10-K or 10-Q for current status.
