I have been a Cingular Wireless customer for almost four years. Cingular gave superb service for the first two years and they have noticeably detiorated over the most recent two years.
We have a family plan with four telephones. One phone was under no contract obligation as the 2 year contract was up. Unfortunately, one of the other three phones was lost. Rather than buy a new phone, I called Cingular about deleting my phone that was no longer under contract and replacing the lost phone with my phone. On two occasions, customer service at Cingular said I could do this without a cancellation charge. Finally, I did do this on November 15th. Today my bill showed a cancellation fee of $150.
I telephoned customer service and spoke to a customer service agent who not helpful, and spoke to a manager said that this swapping of phones in a contract was not allowed. I explained to her that no one told me this at Cingular. She said my only options were to reactivate the lost phone line or buy a new sim card to change my phones number to another number to prevent the cancellation charge.
No matter how many times I told them that customer service had told me I could do this phone swap without penalty, they would not admit that perhaps I was given the wrong information.
This was about the fourth time I had inappropiate charges to my bill, due to wrong information from customer service.
My advice, go elswhere for wireless service. Cingular does not care for the customer.
Last advice; do not do automatic payments. If you get a bill you disagree with, at least you have some control before it is paid.
