Engagement Ring Missing From Package, Insurance Capped at $500

On June 30th my fiance shipped a package by FedEx from Montreal, QC. Inside were two lipsticks and a 14K engagement ring set with three diamonds. FedEx collected it in Anjou, QC and moved it to Mirabel, QC, and from there it reached the FedEx facility in Memphis, TN. Clearance in Memphis took two extra days. It was handed to me in Kenner, LA, at 8:42 A.M. on Friday, July 3rd.

Opening the box, I found the two lipsticks but no ring. I contacted FedEx right away and was connected with a customer relations representative, who started looking for the ring.

Because of the holiday weekend, nothing was reported to me until Monday, July 6th. At 5:00 P.M. EST that day the representative said the ring could not be found and offered to open a claim. I did not want the search to end, and since my fiance had bought and shipped the ring, I left the decision to him. He asked FedEx to keep looking a while longer.

FedEx kept searching through the rest of that week, then told my fiance the ring was not going to turn up and again offered a claim. He opened it on Tuesday, July 14th and finished it on Thursday, July 16th.

He had insured the package for $500. The ring was really worth more than that, but FedEx told him $500 was the highest insured value allowed. On Friday, July 24th he received a check for $564.00, which was the $500 of coverage plus the shipping charges.

FedEx's official line is that the ring was "lost." Obviously, though, an employee took it, because the ring was the only thing missing from the package.

Between FedEx's predatory insurance and claim rules and its "misplacing" (really, stealing) of the ring to begin with, my fiance lost a large part of the ring's value.

All of this leaves me feeling victimized twice over: first our property was stolen, and then we were shortchanged by being paid only a fraction of what it was worth.

Many women dream of receiving an engagement ring, and FedEx ruined that for me. I will never use FedEx again, and I will do my best to avoid ordering from any company that ships with them.
