Sears washing machine warranty madness - Kenmore Washe

We bought a Kenmore washing machine from Sears about 18 months ago for about $500. My wife bought the Warranty package from Sears, as she relies on the machine every day.
The machine started to get noisy a couple of months ago. We called. Service visit scheduled. The technician visited, said it needed parts and repair. Ordered parts. Parts arrived, another service visit scheduled. Tech #2 turned up late. Another service visit arranged. Tech #3 arrived and spend an hour banging the inside of the machine trying to get something lose. Literally hitting it with a wrench. I eventually lent him a big hammer and he got it separated... Then said it needed another part. At this point we said we felt the situation had gone far enough and we wanted a replacement machine. We spoke to Sears on phone. They said another tech would need to come out and declare the machine unserviceable. We explained the details, and asked them to use common sense - a new washer would be cheaper and quicker for all concerned. They said they 'had to' follow procedure. Which would mean that we were probably without a washing machine for 2 weeks (to get visit, process paperwork and send replacement machine).
We decided to just give up with Sears - went to Home Depot and bought a new washing machine that afternoon. Cost us $600, but we'll never make the mistake of using Sears again or falling for the 'warranty' option.
Ps Sears never followed-up to find out what we wanted to do next - nor honor their obligations under the Warranty
