Consumer Report

It's pretty impressive.

Your macbook breaks. You google "Apple Help" on your phone and stupidly dial the first number that comes up without noting the deceptive website, like apple. Support. Mytechhelp.com. So you think you're calling Apple and the tech support guy says "thanks for calling for help with your Apple product." You explain the situation, but of course he needs to check to see if you're still covered under warranty. After collecting your personal information and asking for the serial number you learn (surprise!) your laptop's no longer covered by the warranty so you'll need to buy a new one. Of course, this is very enticing because you didn't know Apple sold 3 month plans for only $99, plus, if they can't fix the problem they'll refund you $49 or something. They are slick and they move fast — usually I'm a very reluctant, pensive customer. They will make you feel like a slacker for not resolving your computer issues tonight. They will tell you you can go to sleep and their guys can work on it over night. You think, creepy, but it's Apple so I trust them. Once you give your credit card info you're transferred to tech staff who answers "My Tech Help" prompting you to question who you called in the first place — but they will let you believe that Apple transferred you. They'll put you on hold. For so long that you hang up. Then... Yes you do... You call back because they probably charged you after all so you might as well see if they can fix the problem, plus they're connected with Apple, right? They are even nicer than before and even though they can't find your account info it sounds like they're going to fix this, maybe for free... Before you know it some guy is remoting into your laptop — he actually knows some stuff about macs, but can't fix this one because it's a hardware issue. No worries. You can just send your laptop to them, it will cost $119 and they'll deduct the $99 you paid early... So really only $20 extra bucks including shipping. Sounds great, but he'll transfer you back to the sales team to discuss the details, but looks like the sales team left for the day and wow you call your credit card company and you've been charged twice as much as you thought.

When you realize they've charged you for fixing a hardware issue before you've even sent them your computer YOU UNDERSTAND FINALLY THAT THEY WILL CONTINUE TO CHARGE YOU FOR NOTHING UNTIL YOU CANCEL YOUR CREDIT CARD.
