Complaint record: BBB, CFPB, Trustpilot and posts on this site
BBB. The BBB profile for Truist Bank, 214 N Tryon St, Charlotte, shows Truist Bank as a BBB Accredited Business since October 1, 1986, with an A+ BBB rating. It shows 3,375 complaints in the last 3 years, 815 of them in the last 12 months, and a customer review average of 1.1 out of 5 from 857 reviews. The A+ rating is BBB's grade of the business and is separate from the customer reviews. The profile lists BB&T Bank and SunTrust Bank, both marked as now Truist, among its alternate names, together with Truist Financial Corporation, Sheffield Financial, Regional Acceptance and Service Finance Company.
CFPB Consumer Complaint Database. Under the company name TRUIST FINANCIAL CORPORATION the database shows 25,448 complaints received since November 6, 2019. The largest product groups are checking or savings accounts (10,312), credit reporting (3,737 under the current label and 1,681 under an older label), mortgages (2,983), vehicle loans or leases (1,686), debt collection (1,525) and credit cards (981 under the current label and 555 under an older one). Truist's responses are recorded as closed with explanation (22,511), closed with non-monetary relief (1,558), closed with monetary relief (1,173) and in progress (206); 25,199 responses are marked timely and 249 not timely. The CFPB publishes complaints without verifying the consumer's account. The predecessors are listed separately: SUNTRUST BANKS, INC. has 9,634 complaints, the latest received in February 2020, and BB&T CORPORATION has 5,522, the latest also received in February 2020. These counts are separate and are not added together.
Trustpilot. The listing for www.truist.com shows a TrustScore of 1.2 out of 5 from 2,225 reviews and is marked as an unclaimed profile, meaning Truist has not taken control of it. The reviews are written by users, and Trustpilot does not confirm them with the bank.
Posts on this site. These are consumers' own unverified accounts. Most concern BB&T (Branch Banking and Trust) or SunTrust and were written before the 2019 merger, so they describe the predecessor banks at the time rather than Truist's current products and fees.

Before you call, gather the dates and amounts involved, the last four digits of the account or card, the names of the people you spoke to, and screenshots of any online-banking or app screen. Follow up anything important in writing and keep copies.
- 1. Call Truist. Truist's contact page lists 844-4TRUIST (844-487-8478) for calls within the U.S. and +1-910-914-8250 from abroad. Staff answer Monday to Friday 8 AM to 8 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 5 PM Eastern time; on Sunday only the 24-hour automated service is available.
More detailShow less
Existing mortgage customers use 855-257-4040. Ask for a case or reference number, and if the call does not settle the matter, put the complaint in writing to Truist with that number, the facts and the outcome you want.
- 2. Fraud or a charge you do not recognize: act at once. Fraud is reported 24/7 at 844-487-8478 by selecting option 1 (the contact page's quick-numbers list adds option 4 within that menu), or through the Report fraud link on truist.com/fraud-and-security. Under federal rules for debit cards and electronic transfers, the CFPB explains that if you report a lost or stolen debit card within two business days, your loss is capped at $50 or the unauthorized amount, whichever is less, and can reach $500 if you wait longer; unauthorized withdrawals shown on a statement should be reported within 60 days of that statement. These limits protect you against transfers you did not make. If a fraudster talked you into sending the money yourself, for example by Zelle, wire or ACH, the same caps may not apply: report it to Truist at once anyway, ask in writing for the payment to be reviewed and, where possible, recalled, and report the fraud to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov as well as to the FTC (see step 5). For a Truist credit card, a billing error dispute has to be sent to the card issuer in writing within 60 calendar days of the statement that first showed the charge.
- 3. CFPB. If Truist does not resolve the problem, file at consumerfinance.gov/complaint. The CFPB forwards complaints to the company and says most companies respond within 15 days. Truist appears there as TRUIST FINANCIAL CORPORATION.
- 4. FDIC and the North Carolina Commissioner of Banks. Truist Bank is a state-chartered bank supervised by the FDIC and the North Carolina Office of the Commissioner of Banks. The FDIC takes written complaints about banks through its FDIC Information and Support Center at ask.fdic.gov, or by mail to 1100 Walnut Street, Box #11, Kansas City, MO 64106, and refers complaints outside its oversight to the right agency. The Commissioner of Banks' website, nccob.nc.gov, has a File a Consumer Complaint link.
- 5. Other options. Your state attorney general's consumer protection office, and the BBB profile for Truist Bank, accept complaints as well. If someone tricked you into sending money or posed as Truist, also report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- SunTrust overdraft settlement. The claim period for the Georgia SunTrust overdraft settlement has closed; questions about a submitted claim or a payment go to the settlement administrator (details under Lawsuits and settlements).
Truist's current overdraft terms. Truist says Truist One Checking does not charge overdraft fees or overdraft-related fees and includes a Balance Buffer that lets the account be overdrawn by up to $100. For other accounts, Truist's contact page describes Overdraft Coverage, an optional service not available with Truist One Checking or the Truist Confidence Account, under which Truist may pay ATM and one-time debit card transactions when the available balance is too low. It may charge a $36 fee for each overdraft transaction, up to three fees a day, and charges no overdraft fee when the original transaction is under $5.
More detailShow less
Overdraft Coverage does not cover checks, ACH payments or debit card payments set up to repeat automatically; Truist may still pay those at its discretion, and fees may apply. The exact terms for your account are in your own account agreement and fee schedule.
Regulator and agency actions
Who supervises Truist. According to Truist's 10-K for 2025, Truist Financial Corporation, as a bank holding company and financial holding company, is supervised by the Federal Reserve Board. Truist Bank is a North Carolina state-chartered commercial bank that is not a member of the Federal Reserve System, so it is supervised by the North Carolina Office of the Commissioner of Banks and the FDIC. Truist Bank and its affiliates are also supervised by the CFPB for certain federal consumer financial protection laws.
Actions naming Truist Bank. On August 14, 2024 the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) issued an order filing and settling charges against Truist Bank as a registered swap dealer. The order found that Truist failed to keep required records and to supervise its swap dealer business properly, because employees, including senior staff, widely used personal text messages and other unapproved channels for business communications. Truist admitted the facts in the order, was ordered to pay a $3 million civil monetary penalty and to take specific remedial steps. The CFTC said the penalty was substantially reduced because Truist reported the problem itself and cooperated. The matter concerns the bank's swap dealing, not consumer accounts.
The CFPB's enforcement-actions list has no action under the Truist name, and the Federal Reserve's enforcement-actions list shows no order against Truist Financial Corporation or Truist Bank as an institution. The Federal Reserve entries that mention Truist are letters about individual people connected with SunTrust Bank, now Truist Bank, not actions against the bank.

Actions against the predecessor banks. The actions on this page were taken before the December 2019 merger against BB&T Corporation and the SunTrust companies. They concern the predecessors, not the combined Truist.
- SunTrust Mortgage, Inc., CFPB and partners, filed June 17, 2014. The CFPB, the Department of Justice, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and attorneys general in 49 states and the District of Columbia filed a proposed federal court order requiring SunTrust Mortgage to provide $500 million in loss-mitigation relief to underwater borrowers, pay $40 million to about 48,000 consumers who lost their homes to foreclosure and $10 million to the federal government; a parallel Justice Department mortgage-lending filing added a $418 million penalty. The case was in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, 1:14-cv-01028, and the CFPB lists its status as expired, terminated or dismissed.
- Federal Reserve cease and desist order, April 13, 2011. Issued against SunTrust Banks, Inc., SunTrust Bank and SunTrust Mortgage, Inc. as one of the actions the Fed took that day against 10 banking organizations over residential mortgage loan servicing and foreclosure processing. The Fed's list shows the order terminated on January 12, 2018.
- Federal Reserve civil money penalty of $160 million, July 25, 2014. Assessed against SunTrust Banks, Inc., SunTrust Bank and SunTrust Mortgage, Inc. for unsafe and unsound practices in residential mortgage loan servicing and processing; the Fed says an agreement in principle was reached on October 10, 2013.
- Federal Reserve cease and desist order, January 25, 2017. Issued upon consent against BB&T Corporation, solely to settle the matter without a formal proceeding. The order recites that a Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond inspection identified significant deficiencies in BB&T's firmwide compliance with Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money-laundering requirements. The Fed's list shows it terminated on April 17, 2019.
- Federal Reserve civil money penalty of $1,501,000, May 24, 2017. Assessed upon consent against SunTrust Bank under the National Flood Insurance Act, in connection with repeated violations of the Fed's flood insurance rule, Regulation H, 12 C.F.R. 208.25, and issued solely to settle the matter without a formal proceeding.
- Federal Reserve consent order, November 19, 2019. On the day it approved the BB&T and SunTrust merger, the Fed issued a consent order against SunTrust Bank for unfair and deceptive practices. The Fed said SunTrust made misleading or inaccurate statements between 2013 and 2017 to certain business customers about how certain add-on products worked and were billed, had already ended those practices, and since 2016 had repaid about $8.8 million in fees. The Fed's list shows the order terminated on June 10, 2021.
Lawsuits and settlements
Bickerstaff v. SunTrust Bank (State Court of Fulton County, Georgia, Civil File 10EV010485). The class action was filed on July 12, 2010. The plaintiff alleged that overdraft fees SunTrust charged on debit-card and ATM transactions were in fact interest subject to Georgia's usury laws. Truist's SEC filings say the trial court certified a class of Georgia SunTrust account holders on October 6, 2017, that the certification was affirmed on appeal, and that the class sought up to $452 million in overdraft fees plus prejudgment interest. Later rulings, including a Georgia Court of Appeals decision of February 20, 2025 that affirmed a trial-court order in part and reversed it in part, reduced the amount at issue.
Settlement. On January 20, 2026 Truist entered into a settlement with the class, without any admission of liability or wrongdoing, and agreed to contribute up to $240 million to a settlement fund that pays class counsel fees and expenses, administration costs, an incentive payment to the class representative and valid claims. The court granted final approval on May 26, 2026. Claim forms were mailed or emailed to class members from July 14, 2026, and the deadline to submit a claim was September 14, 2026; it has passed. Truist's quarterly report for the period ended September 30, 2026 says settlement payments are expected to be made in the fourth quarter of 2026. The settlement website says SunTrust denies that the fees it charged in connection with overdrafts constitute interest and denies that it violated any law or is liable for any claim in the lawsuit.
More on the lawsuitsShow less
Who was in the class. According to the settlement website, the class covers people with a SunTrust account not closed before June 1, 2010 who, between July 12, 2006 and April 15, 2014, had at least one overdraft of $500 or less from an ATM or debit-card transaction, paid an overdraft fee on it that was not refunded, and were Georgia citizens on July 12, 2010 and continuously through October 6, 2017. Class members with questions about a claim or payment can call the settlement administrator, Epiq, toll-free at 1-877-239-8765.
Prerecorded calls to non-customers: Truong v. Truist Bank (federal court, North Carolina, 3:23-cv-00079). Filed on February 10, 2023, the class action alleged that Truist placed prerecorded calls about unrelated accounts to cell phones of people who did not bank with it, in violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. Truist denies the allegations and any wrongdoing. The parties agreed to a $4.1 million settlement covering users of 5,998 cell phone numbers called between February 10, 2019 and August 31, 2022; the court granted preliminary approval on April 30, 2025, and class members did not need to file a claim to be paid.
Website trackers: Tasker v. Truist. In May 2025 a California resident filed a proposed class action in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, alleging that tracking tools on Truist's website collected visitors' data without consent in violation of the California Invasion of Privacy Act. Banking Dive reported in August 2025 that Truist settled the case; the terms were not disclosed.
Other proceedings. Truist's annual report says it is routinely named as a defendant in, or is a party to, numerous actual or threatened legal proceedings, so the cases on this page are not the only suits that name it.

Who is Truist
Truist Financial Corporation says it is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, and that Truist Bank, its largest subsidiary, 'was chartered in 1872 and is the oldest bank headquartered in North Carolina'. Its annual report (Form 10-K) for 2025 calls Truist Bank 'one of the 10 largest commercial banks in the U.S.' with 1,927 branches as of December 31, 2025, and lists consumer and small business banking, commercial and corporate banking, investment banking, wealth management, payments and specialized lending among its businesses.
The 2019 merger. A Form 8-K filed December 9, 2019 says that effective December 6, 2019, Truist Financial Corporation (previously BB&T Corporation) completed a merger of equals with SunTrust Banks, Inc.: 'SunTrust merged with and into the Company, with the Company surviving the merger'. It adds that 'SunTrust Bank ... merged with and into Branch Banking and Trust Company ... with Branch Bank continuing as the surviving bank. In connection with the Bank Merger, Branch Bank changed its name to "Truist Bank".' Complaints filed before December 2019 under the names BB&T or SunTrust therefore concern the predecessor banks, whose business Truist Bank continued as their legal successor; they do not describe Truist's current products and fees.
