ADT complaints, cancellation and contract questions: what ADT's own pages say (checked October 11, 2026)
ADT sells and monitors home security systems through ADT LLC, doing business as ADT Security Services, and through about 140 independent authorized dealers (the 10-K figure as of December 31, 2025). Check your paperwork for the party that signed you up: your agreement may be with ADT itself or with a dealer whose account was later purchased by ADT. The ADT 10-K says dealer-generated contracts 'typically have an initial term of three years with automatic renewals for successive 30-day periods, unless canceled by either party'.
How ADT says to cancel monitoring. ADT's help article states: 'For your security, we cannot accept cancellation requests via email.' If the system was bought online, log in to MyADT (myadt.com, Account > Manage Subscriptions) or to ADT+ (plus.adt.com, Billing > Manage Subscriptions > Cancel Subscription) and fill out the cancellation form. 'If you do not see a cancellation form, you did not purchase your system online. Please call 1-800-ADT-ASAP.' The article adds that it may help to have your contract available. For ADT+ and ADT Blu DIY plans, ADT's residential terms page says: 'Cancel by calling (888) 392-2039 or by following the instructions in your order confirmation email.'
Contract end date. ADT's help center says the end date is in MyADT (Account > Account Documents > View Contract End Date) and that 'If you do not see a contract end date, this may indicate you are not currently under contract with ADT'; it also says a contract may not be viewable if the account is less than 90 days old.
Early-termination charges. Read the exact clause in your own contract. As one example of ADT wording, its 'Existing Customers' terms page, in the fine print of a relocation offer, states: 'Upon early termination of 36-month monitoring contract, ADT may charge 75% of the monthly service charges due for the balance of the initial contract term' and lists a 24-month contract in California for that offer. That sentence belongs to that offer; it is not a statement of every ADT contract. ADT's residential terms page, in the fine print of new-customer offers, states: 'Requires 36-month monitoring contract' (24-month in California for that offer) and 'Upon early termination of 36-month monitoring contract, ADT may charge 75% of the monthly service charges due for the balance of the initial contract term'. Again, that wording belongs to those offers.
Price increases. ADT's help article says a bill 'may be slightly increased when necessary' and that customers 'will receive notice of any price increase prior to the billing period in which it will take effect.'
Servicemembers. In April 2026 ADT settled a Department of Justice matter about a 30-day notice requirement for servicemembers terminating under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act; see the regulator section. DOJ says the SCRA allows termination after orders to relocate to a location that does not support the contract and that companies cannot charge fees beyond the current billing period. The settlement says ADT will not impose that 30-day notice on servicemembers who lawfully terminate under 50 U.S.C. 3956.
Where else to complain. ADT's help center has a chat option; BBB publishes a profile for ADT Security Services with complaints and reviews tabs; the FTC states that complaints can be filed through its Complaint Assistant or at 1-877-FTC-HELP; your state attorney general handles state consumer-protection complaints, and BBB's page lists the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation as licensing resources for Florida. For a door-to-door or mailer offer, ADT publishes a dealer lookup page where licence numbers given by dealers can be checked by state. Keep the contract, billing statements, dates and names of calls.
April 2026 data incident. ADT's security notice says unauthorized access to a limited set of customer and prospective customer data was detected on April 20, 2026. See the complaint-record and company sections for what ADT and its SEC filing say.
ADT regulators: DOJ servicemember settlement (2026), FTC orders (2014, 2007)
U.S. Department of Justice, Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (April 14, 2026). The DOJ announced that ADT LLC, doing business as ADT Security Services, 'will pay over $1.3 million' to resolve allegations that it violated the SCRA by imposing unlawful charges on servicemembers who terminated home security contracts after military relocation orders. The settlement agreement says the United States alleges ADT imposed a 30-day notice requirement and that, since January 5, 2023, ADT 'has received over 3,400 requests' from servicemember customers to terminate based on relocation. Terms: up to $1,260,000 in compensation to affected servicemembers, a $79,380 civil penalty, a bar on the 30-day notice requirement for servicemembers terminating under 50 U.S.C. 3956, refunds of fees paid for periods after termination within 60 days, written SCRA policies and training. The agreement states that ADT 'represents that it followed a generally applicable 30-day notice policy', that it 'denies any violation of the SCRA or any other federal, state, or local statute or regulation' and that nothing in it is 'any admission of liability, wrongdoing, or violation of law'. Under the agreement, ADT deposits $1,260,000 into an interest-bearing escrow account; the United States determines the aggrieved servicemembers, who then sign a release before ADT mails compensation checks, and the agreement is in effect for four years from its effective date. DOJ's release directs servicemembers who believe their SCRA rights were violated to the nearest Armed Forces Legal Assistance Program office.
Federal Trade Commission, In the Matter of ADT LLC, Docket C-4460 (final order June 24, 2014). The FTC charged that ADT LLC 'misrepresented that paid endorsements from safety and technology experts who appeared as guests on news programs and talk shows were independent reviews.' The consent order prohibits ADT from misrepresenting that a discussion or demonstration is 'an independent review provided by an impartial expert', requires clear disclosure of material connections to endorsers and removal of non-compliant endorsements. The order recites that ADT 'neither admits nor denies any of the allegations in the draft complaint except as specifically stated in the consent agreement' and that it 'will terminate on June 18, 2034, or twenty (20) years from the most recent date' of a later FTC complaint alleging violation, whichever is later. The FTC voted 4-0-1 to approve it.
FTC and Department of Justice, Telemarketing Sales Rule (2007). The United States, acting for the FTC, filed a complaint in the Southern District of Florida on November 7, 2007, and a consent decree was entered November 20, 2007 (per the FTC case page). The decree states the case was settled 'without adjudication of any issue of fact or law, and without Defendant admitting liability'; it records that the defendant 'denies any violations of the Telemarketing Sales Rule', and the FTC's 'Reasons for Settlement' statement in the same decree package says the order with ADT 'provides for a civil penalty of $2 million'. The decree enjoins ADT from violating the Telemarketing Sales Rule, including the National Do Not Call Registry provisions, and from causing telemarketers to violate them (it defines 'Authorized Dealer' and 'Authorized Telemarketer'); the statement of reasons covers separate orders with Alarm King, Inc. and Direct Security Services, Inc.

Who ADT is: ADT Inc., ADT LLC, dealers, brands and recent divestitures
ADT Inc. is a Delaware holding company headquartered at 1501 Yamato Road, Boca Raton, Florida; its stock trades on the NYSE as ADT. Its 10-K says customer contracts are entered 'primarily through its main operating entity and wholly-owned subsidiary, ADT LLC'. The 10-K says ADT Inc. was incorporated in May 2015, acquired Protection One and ASG Intermediate Holding Corp. in July 2015, acquired The ADT Security Corporation (formerly named The ADT Corporation) in May 2016 and completed its IPO in January 2018. As of December 31, 2025 (10-K), its three largest shareholders were State Farm Fire & Casualty Company (about 16%), Apollo Global Management (about 12%) and The Vanguard Group (about 8%), with the Class B common stock owned by Google LLC. Since then the 10-Q for June 30, 2026 states that entities managed by Apollo sold their remaining approximately 102 million shares in May 2026 and that, as of May 5, 2026, 'Apollo no longer owns any shares of the Company's common stock and has ceased to be a related party'; State Farm's Schedule 13D/A of August 11, 2026 reports 19.72% (based on shares outstanding as of July 23, 2026).
What it sells. The company says (10-K) it serves residential and small business customers, had about 6.1 million monitoring subscribers at December 31, 2025, operates six UL-listed monitoring centers, and is building around its ADT+ app and a commercial partnership with Google. Its site separates professionally installed systems from ADT Blu do-it-yourself systems. Its 10-K reports 2025 total revenue of about $5.13 billion, of which $4.35 billion was monitoring and related services.
Dealers and bulk account purchases. The 10-K says about 140 independent authorized dealers must offer ADT their qualified monitored accounts and that ADT also buys blocks of customer accounts from other providers. A dealer, installer or door-to-door salesperson who signs you up is therefore not necessarily ADT, even when the contract is later assigned to ADT. BBB's profile for ADT also lists 'DEFENDERS d/b/a Protect Your Home' and 'Defenders, Inc.' as alternate names; many archive complaints name 'Protect Your Home' and call it an authorized dealer.
Business lines ADT no longer operates. (1) Commercial: the 10-K says ADT completed the sale of its commercial business to GTCR LLC on October 2, 2023 for approximately $1.6 billion. (2) Solar: on January 19, 2024 the board approved a plan to exit residential solar ('ADT Solar Exit'); the 10-K says substantially all operations had ceased as of June 30, 2024. (3) Multifamily: ADT LLC agreed on September 12, 2025 to sell its multifamily business assets to Everon, LLC (Form 8-K), and the 10-K says the sale was completed on October 1, 2025. Customers of those lines should use the contact details on their own contract or statements.
Newest corporate item read. The 10-K says ADT acquired Origin Wireless, Inc. ('Origin AI') on February 20, 2026 for $170 million in cash, a provider of AI-enabled presence detection.
ADT complaint record: archive posts, BBB and Trustpilot as displayed on October 11, 2026
Archive posts. This site's archive holds 62 approved posts that name ADT or ADT Security Services as the business, dated 2001 to 2013, and 20 more that name ADT together with an authorized dealer, reseller or salesperson (linked as affiliates, not counted as ADT's own). No archive post dated after 2013 matched in the search run on October 11, 2026. These are consumers' accounts, not findings. Counting only the 62 posts about ADT itself, keyword matches in the text were: cancel/terminate/early-term 31, contract/sales/promise wording 46, billing/charge/refund/collection 22, false alarm/faulty/monitoring/sensor wording 26, install/appointment/technician/wait 34 (a post can match several; these are keyword counts, not categories).
BBB (as displayed on 2026-10-11). Profile 'ADT Security Services', Boca Raton, FL: rating A, BBB Accredited; 'Reasons for rating: 10,732 complaint(s) filed against business'; the complaints tab shows 10,732 total complaints in the last 3 years and 3,513 filed in the last 12 months; the reviews tab shows an average of 2,817 customer reviews at 1.07 out of 5. BBB's page data show accreditation from 2013-03-11 and a file opened 2002-03-14. BBB notes that the displayed complaint text may not represent all complaints and that numbers should be read against company size.
Trustpilot (as displayed on 2026-10-11). Business shown as 'ADT USA' (adt.com): claimed profile, 5,170 reviews, TrustScore 1.2. Trustpilot states it does not fact-check reviews.
CFPB and ComplaintsBoard. A company-name lookup for 'ADT' in the CFPB consumer-complaint database suggestion service on October 11, 2026 returned no company name containing ADT, so no CFPB counts are shown. A ComplaintsBoard profile was not located in the check run for this page.
April 2026 data incident. ADT's Form 8-K filed April 24, 2026 (event date April 20) says it 'became aware of unauthorized access to certain cloud-based environments' on April 20, 2026, engaged outside experts, notified law enforcement and determined 'only limited customer and prospective customer data was accessed', and that it did not believe the incident was reasonably likely to have a material impact on its financial condition. The customer-notice email reproduced in a copy of ADT's notice published by Massachusetts on mass.gov (https://www.mass.gov/doc/2026-1226-adt-inc/download, opened October 11, 2026) says the information was 'limited to names, phone numbers, and addresses', with dates of birth and the last four digits of Social Security numbers in 'a small percentage of cases', and that no credit card or banking information was accessed. ADT's security notice says affected people with Social Security or Tax ID digits received identity monitoring through Cyberscout, and 'Details about this offer were mailed the week of June 26'. This page states no count of affected people because the ADT documents read give none.
Earlier incidents in ADT's SEC filings. A Form 8-K dated August 8, 2024 said unauthorized actors accessed 'certain databases containing ADT customer order information' and obtained limited customer information including email addresses, phone numbers and postal addresses. A Form 8-K dated October 7, 2024 said an unauthorized actor accessed ADT's network 'using compromised credentials obtained through a third-party business partner' and exfiltrated 'certain encrypted internal ADT data associated with employee user accounts', and that ADT did not believe customers' personal information had been exfiltrated.
ADT court cases: Edenborough settlement, 2007 FTC decree and 2026 federal dockets
Edenborough v. ADT, LLC, No. 4:16-cv-02233 (N.D. Cal.). A consumer class action alleging ADT did not disclose that its wireless home security systems were unencrypted and lacked authentication. The July 22, 2019 order (Document 160) granted final approval of a settlement with a $16 million common fund; the class was customers who, between November 13, 2009 and August 15, 2016, contracted for a residential system with at least one wireless peripheral sensor. The order projected payments of $15.08 for contracts from November 13, 2009 to July 23, 2014 and $45.22 for contracts from July 24, 2014 to August 15, 2016, no reversion to ADT, and notices to millions of potential class members. The CourtListener docket's newest entry read is Document 163, an objection filed by a class member on October 21, 2019; whether any appeal followed was not verified.
United States v. ADT Security Services, Inc. (S.D. Fla., 2007). The FTC Do Not Call consent decree summarized in the regulator section; entered November 20, 2007.
2026 federal dockets naming ADT Inc. or ADT LLC. A CourtListener search of the Southern District of Florida on October 11, 2026 for 'ADT' with filing dates from April 1, 2026 returned ten results, eight of them with ADT as a party (two others, Eli Lilly v. DrugPlace and Mader v. EMED, only cite ADT cases): Smith (9:26-cv-80493), Beckwith (9:26-cv-80494), Lincoln (9:26-cv-80495), Jamison (9:26-cv-80504), James (9:26-cv-80546), St. John (9:26-cv-80564), Moore (9:26-cv-80611) and ADT, LLC v. ERR Content IP, LLC (9:26-cv-80626), a suit ADT LLC filed in state court that the defendant removed to federal court on May 28, 2026 (the docket shows a patent/trademark reporting form, AO 120, sent to the USPTO; the complaint was not read). The search listing shows termination dates in June 2026 for Smith, Beckwith, Lincoln, Jamison and James, and the James, Moore and St. John dockets read show notices of voluntary dismissal followed by orders closing the case. The Beckwith, Lincoln, Jamison and James dockets each begin with a document captioned 'Class Action Complaint'; the James complaint alleges that personal information 'was compromised when an unauthorized party gained access to Defendant's computer network and exfiltrated sensitive data stored therein on or about April 20, 2026', pleads negligence, breach of implied contract, unjust enrichment and declaratory judgment, and the other three complaints use the same 'Data Breach' term tied to April 20, 2026. These are the plaintiffs' allegations, not findings. A complaint text was not read for Smith, Moore or St. John, so they are not characterized. A voluntary dismissal without prejudice is not a ruling on the merits.
What ADT's filings say. ADT's 10-K and June 30, 2026 10-Q state that it is subject to claims 'related to alleged alarm system failures' and 'consumer and employment class actions' in the ordinary course and report no material changes to legal-proceedings disclosures in the second quarter of 2026.
ADT LLC as plaintiff. ADT LLC and The ADT Security Corporation filed a complaint against National Sales Partners, LLC in the W.D.N.C. on June 24, 2026 (3:26-cv-00502; CourtListener lists nature of suit 840, trademark); the claims were not characterized here.
Newer dockets not reviewed. CourtListener party-name searches for 'ADT' also list suits filed from June to September 2026 in other districts (for example Bales, E.D. Va., September 24, 2026); they were not reviewed for this page.
Not verified. Other individual suits against ADT exist in CourtListener (hundreds of dockets name ADT); they were not individually reviewed.
Is ADT Legitimate?
ADT Inc. files annual and quarterly reports with the SEC (CIK 0001703056), its stock trades on the NYSE as ADT, and its 10-K says it had approximately 6.1 million monitoring subscribers at December 31, 2025. Its headquarters at 1501 Yamato Road, Boca Raton, Florida, is stated consistently in the 10-K, the 2014 FTC order, the BBB listing and the site footer. BBB displays an A rating and accreditation for ADT Security Services, together with 10,732 complaints in the last 3 years and a 1.07 out of 5 average over 2,817 customer reviews as displayed on October 11, 2026. ADT has been the subject of a 2014 FTC consent order on paid endorsements, a 2007 FTC/DOJ do-not-call consent decree, a $16 million 2019 settlement over wireless sensors and an April 2026 DOJ servicemember settlement in which it denied any violation. Whether a particular sales representative works for ADT or for an authorized dealer is something to confirm from the contract and ADT's dealer lookup page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is ADT and which company holds my contract?
ADT Inc. (NYSE: ADT, Boca Raton, Florida) is the parent. Its 10-K says contracts are entered primarily through its operating subsidiary ADT LLC, which does business as ADT Security Services. A contract may instead be with an independent authorized dealer (the 10-K counts about 140), so check the party named on your agreement.
How do I cancel ADT monitoring?
ADT's help article says it cannot accept cancellation requests by email. If the system was bought online, log in to MyADT (Account, Manage Subscriptions) or ADT+ (Billing, Cancel Subscription) and complete the form. If no form appears, ADT says to call 1-800-ADT-ASAP. Have the contract available. For ADT+ and ADT Blu DIY plans, ADT's residential terms page says 'Cancel by calling (888) 392-2039 or by following the instructions in your order confirmation email.'
Does ADT charge an early termination fee?
The fee depends on your contract. One ADT page, for a relocation offer, says that on early termination of a 36-month contract 'ADT may charge 75% of the monthly service charges due for the balance of the initial contract term'. ADT's residential terms page repeats the 75% wording in the fine print of new-customer offers. Read your own contract's termination clause.
How do I find my ADT contract end date?
ADT's help center says to log in to MyADT, open Account, then Account Documents, and select View Contract End Date; if the button is absent you may not be under contract. App users go to Account Documents and then Contracts. Accounts under 90 days old may not show a contract yet.
Can military members end an ADT contract when relocating?
Under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (50 U.S.C. 3956), DOJ says, servicemembers may terminate certain consumer contracts any time after receiving military orders to relocate to a location that does not support the contract, and companies cannot charge fees beyond the current billing period. In April 2026 ADT agreed to pay up to $1,260,000 to affected servicemembers and a $79,380 civil penalty and to stop imposing a 30-day notice requirement on lawful SCRA terminations, while denying any violation.
What did ADT say about its April 2026 data incident?
ADT's Form 8-K (filed April 24, 2026; event date April 20) says it became aware of unauthorized access to certain cloud-based environments and that only limited customer and prospective customer data was accessed. ADT's security notice lists the data as names, phone numbers, emails and addresses, and in a small percentage of cases dates of birth and the last four digits of Social Security numbers or Tax IDs, and says no payment information was accessed and security systems were not affected. The notice also says: 'At this time, you do not need to take any action', and encourages customers to remain alert for phishing emails, phone calls or text messages from people claiming to represent ADT. Putative class actions over the incident were filed in S.D. Fla. in 2026 (see court cases); they are allegations.
Has the FTC taken action against ADT?
FTC pages show two matters: a 2014 consent order (Docket C-4460) over paid endorsements presented as independent reviews, and a 2007 do-not-call consent decree with a $2 million civil penalty (per the FTC's statement of reasons). In both, the documents record that ADT did not admit liability or denied violations.
Was there an ADT class action settlement over wireless sensors?
Edenborough v. ADT, LLC (N.D. Cal.) ended in a court-approved $16 million settlement; final approval was granted on July 22, 2019 for customers with wireless sensors who contracted between November 13, 2009 and August 15, 2016.
What is ADT's BBB rating and how many complaints are listed?
The BBB profile titled ADT Security Services (Boca Raton, file opened March 14, 2002, accredited since March 11, 2013 per the page data) displayed on October 11, 2026: rating A, 10,732 complaints in the last 3 years, 3,513 of them filed in the last 12 months, and 2,817 customer reviews averaging 1.07 out of 5. BBB lists alternate names including Defenders, Inc. and DEFENDERS d/b/a Protect Your Home. The letter rating, the complaint count and the review average are separate BBB measures and are not combined here.
