Complaint / Review
Bank of America
Disgruntled Custome

January 7

To Whom It May Concern:

I have been a private customer of Bank of America since I moved to Washington, DC in 2000 and my employer, has been for longer than I can remember.

As a customer and as a taxpayer who helped bail you out, I am extremely disgruntled and disappointed.

I am originally from Cleveland, Ohio and have since 2000 traveled there frequently, all the time using my check card. Never once was I ever flagged. This past holiday, I was there, spent minimum dollars (mostly at gas stations where I had to prove who I was with my zip code) and yet when I got home, I was surprised to see that I was flagged. My account was suspended but of course I didn’t know this until I received calls and it was obvious I couldn’t use my account., I’m all for being careful, but this seemed over the top.

In the meantime, as soon as I got home, I deposited throes checks into the ATM, totaling over $2,000. I have recently found out that one of those checks (for almost $400) has been placed on hold until Monday, January 11. Another amount ($200) was placed on hold and released yesterday (No supervisor today can tell me about that hold as it’s already gone through and has been credited to my account). I have been given two reasons for the hold on the $399.50. One is because they are not sure the bank in question has the money and the second is because at the time I deposited the checks, my balance was in arrears. Neither of these make sense to me as I have never once had a check held because my account is in arrears (I am trying to make good on my account and I get penalized for it by holding my check???) and second, this check has been coming to me from the same bank for over I believe 10 years and has been deposited and honored each quarter it has been cashed. I was not told that this check would be placed on hold. And on hold for one full week? In a system that is or should be completely automated?

Yesterday, I was told by a Bank of America representative, that the $10 taken out of the ATM would NOT be subject to a $35 fee – that it would be waived ass the $200 that had been held was released to my account (I still don’t know why that check was held.) I did get a $35 fee slapped on my account for that after being told 3 times that it would not happen. Neither manager I spoke with on the phone was willing to waive this fee as I had been promised!

Last night I made calls to friends and colleagues and none suggested I stay with you. Many had dropped Bank of America. Sure enough, I googled “Hate Bank of America” into the search engine and came up with six pages of links. Do you really need this publicity?

Here’s all I am asking for:

1. That the $399.50 be released to my account Friday, January 8 (you will have had this check for 4 days)
2. That the four $35 overdraft fees assessed on Jan. 6 be waived ads if it wouldn’t have been for the holds on my checks, I wouldn’t be subjected to them. And one of those fees was promised not to be placed on my account.

I have decision-making capability in my organization and can easily pull our money out of your back and out it in another. The treasurer would not argue with that. I don’t want to do this because I have built wonderful relationships with your local staff at my bank.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
