Bank of America complaints and disputes: the bank's own channels and outside complaint routes (checked October 6, 2026)
Bank of America's own pages, opened on October 6, 2026, set out the routes below. The posts on this site linked to this page were written mostly between 2004 and 2013, so this section starts with the bank's current channels.
Disputes. The bank's contact page offers sign-in tools to "Dispute an ATM/Debit Card Transaction" and "Dispute a Credit Card Transaction." Its help page "How to Dispute a Charge" says: "Timely notification is important. Most transactions must be disputed within 60 days of the date of your statement on which the error appeared."
Debit card, check and Zelle transactions. The bank's Deposit Agreement and Disclosures (effective May 15, 2026) says in its section on unauthorized electronic fund transfers: "If you tell us within two business days after you learn of the loss or theft of your card or code, you can lose no more than $50 if someone uses your card without your permission." It adds that if you do not tell the bank within two business days and it can prove it could have stopped the use, "you could lose as much as $500," and that if your statement shows transfers you did not make and you do not tell the bank within 60 days after the statement was mailed, "you may not get back any money you lost after the 60 days" if the bank can prove it could have stopped the loss; it says it will extend the periods for a good reason such as a long trip or hospital stay, and that state law can give more time (it names Massachusetts as an example). The agreement says to report errors and unauthorized transactions by signing in to Online and Mobile Banking, by calling 800.432.1000 during Claims Department business hours, or by writing to Bank of America, PO Box 53137, #7405, Phoenix, AZ 85072-3137. These deposit-account rules differ from the 60-day statement window on the credit card dispute help page quoted above.
Reporting fraud, including Zelle. The bank's "Report Suspicious Activity" page lists, for "ATM, debit, check & Zelle": "Log into Online Banking or call: 800-432-1000 / 877-366-1121," with 1-315-724-4022 as an international collect number, and 800-215-6195 for auto accounts (Mon-Fri 8 a.m.-8 p.m. ET).
Current fees. The bank's Personal Schedule of Fees, marked "Effective August 7, 2026," says it "lists the fees associated with your account and ways to avoid them when applicable." Fee amounts in the government orders described below are historical findings, not the bank's current fees; the current schedule is on the bank's fee page.
Phone numbers by topic (from the bank's contact pages).
- General account information, lost or stolen debit card, opening an account: 800.432.1000, Mon-Fri 8 a.m.-11 p.m. ET and Sat-Sun 8 a.m.-8 p.m. ET.
- Credit card customer service, including a lost or stolen card: 800.732.9194, listed as 24/7. Credit card billing inquiries: 866.266.0212.
- Existing mortgages: 800.669.6607, Mon-Fri 8 a.m.-9 p.m. ET.
Other ways to reach the bank. The contact page lists private messages on the bank's verified Facebook and Instagram pages and to @BofA_Help on X, with representatives listed Mon-Fri 8 a.m.-9 p.m. ET, Sat 9 a.m.-6 p.m. ET and Sun 8 a.m.-5 p.m. ET; it says not to include account or Social Security numbers. The checking and savings contact page lists a mailing address under "Write to us": Bank of America, PO Box 25118, Tampa, FL 33622-5118.
Suspicious messages. The bank's security page says: "Forward suspicious emails or texts that use Bank of America's name to [email protected]" and to forward a suspicious text message to a cell phone provider at 7726 (SPAM); if you responded to a suspicious call, text or email, it says to call the number on your card or bank statement.
Outside complaint routes. The CFPB accepts complaints about financial products at consumerfinance.gov/complaint; its page says "Most companies respond within 15 days" and that in some cases a company provides a final response in 60 days. The same page says "You generally can’t submit a second complaint about the same problem," and asks for the key facts in your own words, the most important dates, amounts and communications, and supporting documents such as account statements (limit: 50 pages). Bank of America, N.A. describes itself as a national bank chartered and examined by the OCC (see the OCC order quoted below), and the OCC's HelpWithMyBank.gov, which "provides information and assistance for customers of national banks," lists a Customer Assistance Group at 1-800-613-6743, Mon-Fri 7 a.m.-7 p.m. CT. The OCC's complaint instructions list issues it cannot help with, including acting "as a court of law or as an attorney on your behalf," becoming involved in a matter that "has been litigated or is being litigated," and seeking monetary compensation.
Government actions: CFPB and OCC orders, 2014 to 2026 (status as of October 6, 2026)
Status is given as shown on each agency page on October 6, 2026. Where a page does not say whether the bank admitted or denied the findings, this page does not either.
- December 23, 2024, OCC Consent Order AA-ENF-2024-56 (Bank Secrecy Act/anti-money-laundering and sanctions compliance). The order says the OCC intended to start cease-and-desist proceedings and that "The Comptroller finds, and the Bank neither admits nor denies" its findings, which include deficiencies in internal controls, the BSA officer, independent testing and training, a breakdown in processes to identify and report suspicious activity, and failure to correct a previously reported customer due diligence deficiency. The bank's second-quarter 2026 Form 10-Q says it "has already completed significant steps to satisfy requirements of the Consent Order; however, resolution of the OCC Consent Order and/or other regulatory inquiries may include the payment of monetary penalties and other remedial actions." The 2025 Form 10-K states the corporation does not believe these issues will have a material adverse financial impact.
- December 20, 2024, CFPB lawsuit against Early Warning Services, LLC, Bank of America, N.A., JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. and Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. (D. Ariz. 2:24-cv-03652). The Bureau alleged unfair acts or practices under the Consumer Financial Protection Act and that the banks violated the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E. On March 4, 2025 the Bureau filed a notice voluntarily dismissing the action against all defendants with prejudice, and on March 5, 2025 the court dismissed the case with prejudice. The CFPB page gives no reason.
- November 28, 2023, CFPB order (HMDA data). The bank was required to pay a $12 million civil money penalty and develop Home Mortgage Disclosure Act compliance procedures. On June 5, 2025 the Bureau terminated the order, stating the bank had "fulfilled the obligations under the order."
- July 11, 2023, CFPB order (repeat non-sufficient funds fees). The Bureau found that assessing repeat $35 NSF fees on re-presented ACH and check items, from September 2018 until February 2022, was unfair. The order requires refunds of repeat NSF fees not yet refunded, "approximately $80.4 million in redress," and a $60 million civil penalty to the Bureau; the page says the OCC concurrently issued a separate $60 million fine. CFPB status shown: Post Order/Post Judgment.
- July 11, 2023, CFPB order (credit card accounts and rewards bonuses). The Bureau found that in certain instances the bank opened credit card accounts without consumer consent and obtained credit reports without a permissible purpose, and engaged in deceptive practices about sign-up bonuses (a bonus advertised as available to all applicants but denied to those who applied by phone or in person; promised bonuses not provided because of employee error). The order requires compliance, redress and a $30 million civil money penalty. CFPB status shown: Post Order/Post Judgment.
- July 14, 2022, CFPB order (unemployment-benefit prepaid debit cards). The Bureau found that from fall 2020 to mid-2021 the bank denied cardholders' notices of error and froze accounts based solely on an automated fraud filter, and required redress plus a $100 million civil penalty; the page says the OCC concurrently issued an order with a $125 million fine. On June 18, 2026 the OCC announced an "Order Terminating the Cease and Desist Order" against Bank of America, N.A. dated July 14, 2022 (AA-ENF-2022-21; termination docket AA-ENF-2026-32). The CFPB page still showed Post Order/Post Judgment. Private litigation over the program continues (see the lawsuits section).
- May 4, 2022, CFPB consent order (garnishments). The Bureau found unfair and deceptive practices in processing garnishment notices, including contract language limiting consumers' rights and failing to tell courts when accounts were out of state. The bank must refund or cancel at least $592,000 in associated fees and pay a $10 million civil penalty. CFPB status shown: Post Order/Post Judgment.
- April 9, 2014, CFPB order (credit card add-on products; Bank of America, N.A. and FIA Card Services, N.A.). The Bureau ordered an estimated $727 million in relief to consumers harmed by add-on products and a $20 million civil money penalty. CFPB status shown: Expired/Terminated/Dismissed.
