Our loan was originally Conseco and later became Green Tree. It is due on the 5th of each month and incurs a late fee after the 10th.
There have been many times when I have included a late fee when I felt my payment might arrive late. There is a box on the remittance slip to indicate if a late fee has been included with payment.
My latest bill had a late fee charge and after checking my bank statement and discovered that my check cleared on time, I sent Green Tree a letter. When they finally got back to me it was to tell me that the late fee charged was for a late payment from LAST year! This is not the first time this has happened.
Oh, and it gets better. They were nice enough to tell me that since my payment goes to a company hired by Green Tree, I need to notify Green Tree of any additional funds I include in my payment and that any extra funds sent will be applied to future payments.
After reading all those letter from other Green Tree customers, I was very angry and, sadly, relieved that I wasn't the only one going through this because I thought I was at fault.
Yes, their reps are very condescending and they do ask personal questions regarding your finances. I am a reasonable person and understand they just want their money but overcharging through late fees when none are due is criminal!
