I was contacted by a telephone solicitor about switching my AT&T telephone service to COX. I was told that there would be no cost involved with the switch and to ignore any calls from AT&T regarding the switch because COX would take care of everything. As it turns out AT&T has sent a bill which includes a cancellation fee. I have called COX about this and was told that they have no control of a cancellation fee from AT&T. When I explained what I was told by the COX representative at the time I was told that a supervisor would contact me. I was never contacted by COX and now this bill has gone to a collection agency. This experience leaves me with a feeling of distrust. Even though there are drawbacks to government regulations there needs to be some protection for consumers against these big companies and their questionable business practices. Since this has occurred I have been thinking back to how I may have gotten switched into a contract with AT&T. I recall getting another telephone solicitation call from AT&T a while back saying that my calling plan was going to be discontinued and this is what they advised for me at the time. Apparently, unknowingly, I had to commit to a contract which is why I ended up with a cancellation fee when I switched to COX. This all seems very deceitful. Is that what has become of American business practices? It is very disappointing.
