About a year ago I signed up with Direct TV. Lately I came across a very good deal from another provider and wanted to switch. When I phoned to cancel, they told me that signing up meant I had automatically accepted an 18 month contract. I am sure I never signed anything to that effect, and they concede I most likely did not, but they say that by accepting Direct TV I am held to the agreement anyway, whether or not it was ever disclosed to me. I have argued with them repeatedly, and everyone I talk to gives me the same answer. They say I did not need to be told, I ought to have known, and the information is on the website. At sign-up I was promised a special price tied to one year of service, but the box rental turns out to run on 18 months.
My advice is not to begin with Direct TV at all. I searched online and found hundreds of similar stories. The company does not disclose this and is plainly deceptive about it. It has already been sued in Florida for deceptive business practices, and I expect more lawsuits to come.
In the end, I paid $140 only to cancel the service, after a year of overpaying for poor TV and bad reception. Direct TV is very dishonest, and I regret ever signing up.
