Target Corp, Baby Registry Return Policy
Return policy is astounding! They really think customers are a necessary evil of business

We recently had our first baby. We're so happy! My wife had registered for her showers at Target. We all know that if you have two or three showers, you get duplicates of some gifts, you change your mind on some things, etc., and you have to take them back. Sometimes people give you a gift receipt, sometimes they do not. It's a fact of these things, and most stores are aware of that and deal with it appropriately. But not Target!

My wife tried to return a few things that she had been given without receipts. She wasn't asking for cash—just store credit, like at any other store. However, Target has a $150 limit on returns to your registry without a receipt. That right there is pretty amazing, and different from any other store we've dealt with in baby or bridal registries.

I contacted Target about this, and was really astounded at their response. They said that if we get the original gift giver to go to a Target store with their credit card, they could look up the purchase and generate a receipt. You heard that right! They want us to call up a friend, tell them we don't want their gift, ask them to go to Target for us, stand in their huge return lines, and generate a receipt for us!!!

This is the exact text from the email they sent me yesterday, after my inquiry:

From your e-mail, it doesn't sound like a team member tried our receipt look up option. Did you know we can look up receipt information for purchases made by check, credit, debit or GiftCards?

To do this, the gift giver can bring the item with their card or check to any Guest Service desk and ask about a receipt look up. Most purchases made within the last 90 days can be found this way. If the look up is successful we can refund the purchase or offer a Target GiftCard.

That's so nice of them, to allow me to offend all of my friends as a privilege of doing business with them.

When I responded to them that this was hardly a sound policy, their response was a terse "I'm sorry we aren't able to help with further returns unless you have a receipt or gift receipt."

We will not be shopping at Target for ANYTHING anymore, since that's how little they care about their customers. And I STRONGLY recommend that you do not do any registering for gifts there. That's clearly something they do not want to be in the business of. If you have friends who are getting married or ready to have children, advise them to avoid registering for gifts at Target. They'll regret it!
