Unfair policy for gift registries

I am about to be a new mother and had registered with the Target Baby Registry as well as Babies R Us. My baby shower was held on May 10 with over 100 guests invited. As I was opening gifts, I noticed that I received many doubles and sometimes triples of things only from the Target gift registry. There was not one duplicate item from Babies R Us. Some guests included gift receipts with the gift, but most did not. Most people, like myself, believe that if it is a gift from a registry, then it is something the recipient has picked out and either needs or wants, and the store the gift is purchased from will take care of the registry so others cannot buy the same gift repeatedly. Therefore, a gift receipt is really unnecessary. I went to a local Target store a few days later to return some of the duplicate items for store credit. Although I did not have gift receipts, every item was one I picked out and was on my registry, and was a duplicate because of Target's error. Although Target has a strict policy on returns and exchanges I did not think it would be a problem since I had a gift registry there and Target made the mistake. I was told the Target policy states if you do not have a receipt you can only receive up to twenty dollars, twice a year, on your drivers license. Whether it was a Target employee, a computer glitch, or a problem with the registry online or otherwise, Target is at fault for not taking the items OFF the registry when they were purchased the first time, therefore allowing others to buy items again and again. Target should not only be responsible for these mistakes, but also accountable. I do not think I should have to call family, friends and in some cases mere acquaintances asking for receipts for gifts bought for me. It is a rude thing to do and puts me in an extremely uncomfortable position. I entrusted Target with my registry and because Target is at fault, and every item I wanted credit for is a duplicate straight from the registry, I should not need any type of receipt for returning these items for store credit. I brought in a lot of business to Target by registering with them and feel my registry should be honored without question. My family and friends spent a lot of money in Target. The items I wished to return were all duplicates because of Target's error and worth about $200. Since I believe it is extremely awkward and in fact rude to call people asking for receipts after they went out of their way to buy me a present for my baby, then according to Target's policy, I will receive no more than $40 for all of these items, actually worth about $200. That to me in criminal. It is in fact, robbery. I was married two years ago and had bridal registries with other stores such as Fortunoff and Bed Bath and Beyond. I also now have a baby registry with Babies R Us. I have never once had a problem returning items from a registry, whether it was due to the company's error or not. I have never experienced as many problems with duplicate gifts like I have at Target, which says something about how the registry is run and handled, and even when I did receive a duplicate here and there at these other stores, I was able to return items for store credit without question, without a receipt, because it was on my registry and my registry was honored. I am not asking for cash back, only store credit. Target would not lose a penny this way. With all of today's technology, they must be able to scan my items and see they were purchased at a Target store and that they were all on my registry. This policy when applied to gift registries is just plain wrong and unfair. The company's motto is "expect more, pay less". They truly live up to this, because although I might pay less, I definately expected a lot more when I registered with this company. Warning to anybody who reads this: Do Not Register With Target!!!
