Apparent Fraud in rates cited when they sell their service over the telephone

I got a call from a man representing himself as an AT&T rep, for 7c/minute long distance telephone service. I signed up. My first bill came in, at 28c/minute. I called to complain, they said it would be fixed in next month's bill. It wasn't. I called again. They assured me it would be fixed in the following month's bill. It wasn't. I called again, and got a very nasty rep somewhere in Texas, who told me to pay the bill, now, before they would do anything.

After a year of letters, and calls, I finally got someone who was willing to listen. They said that the person who had called me was a telemarketer, not an AT&T employee. They said they would take my word on the rates, expressing some doubt. I said who in their right mind would pay 28c/minute for long distance? I did finally get a check for the amount I had overpaid, 2 months later, counting the 7c/minute rate. Sprint pulled the same stunt on me, also. I am not asking for action on this, I do note that it took more than a year, of letters and calls, to finally get them to act.

I find this more and more, companies just refuse, and refuse, and I suppose most people give up and pay. I didn't. Since most people do give up, I report this, you have to write very angry letters, write to state attorney generals, and so on, and keep calling, eventually they will give up. I regret I don't have an address, as this was mostly handled by telephone. This happened in 2002.
