I am a 23 year old single mother from a small town in Ohio. I have been a long time customer of Wal Mart in my town. On Friday July 27 I was in a huge hurry to get some things for my children and then rush home. I was distracted by many friends coming up to me and talking and saying hi, including Trey who is an "undercover" for Wal Mart. He makes sure no one steals and if they do, he catches them. We were friends for a while.
I had gotten things I wanted to purchase and put them all in my cart. I had also purchased a camcorder with a video card in the photo/electronic department, which i paid for with cash & a debit card. I then called my debit card customer service to see how much I had left on my card. I realized after purchasing the camcorder & card that I could not pay for all the other items thqat i needed. Again, I kept getting stopped by friends sayin hi to me and my daughter which distracted me and made me rush even more. I went to the customer service desk to return the 2 items I had purchased. They gave my all of my money back, and after waiting 10 mintues in line, I was REALLY in a hurry!!! I rushed to get out to the car to go home.
As I was walking through the doors, a lady name Christina Ropp stopped me and said " Ma'am, can I see your reciept for these things?" I replied, " Reciept? What?" I looked down at the cart and then realized "OMG! I forgot to pay for my things! I am so sorry, I will go pay for them now." She told me I couldn't and had to go to the office with her because I was stealing and she had already pressed charges on me.
In the office, I was treated poorly, Christina wanted to keep arguing with me, she was very rude and said that I was a horrible mother because I had my daughter with me. Then she said I have done this numerous times before (steal). I laughed and asked her " If so, how's come you've never stopped me then?" She replied " Well, I, um, I. You've done this before!"... The police officer arrived, and said I was lying, and added " How many times have I dealt with you, arresting you after midnight about every other night for being drunk and getting into trouble?" I said "What the hell are you talking about??? I don't even drink, and I have lived at home with my parents for 23 yrs, they'd kill me if I ever came home drunk or was arrested for it." He said " Maybe you'd remember if you were sober!" Then he gave me a citation and now I have to go to court on Tuesday.
I called a lawyer and have to meet him on monday. Hopefully with a criminal defense attorney and my statements I can win. Honest to God, it was a simple mistake and I forgot. You can't tell me that no one has ever been in sych a big rush and wqas distracted that they forgot something. I rushed home and told my dad. I mean, if I were to steal, then I would of put the small items in my diaper bag, which I didn't. They even searched my bag and found nothing! Everything was in the cart as I had put them there, in plain site. That's as if I were asking to get caught! I simply forgot. I got it all mixed up and thought I had already paid for the items at the customer service desk, when I was returning an item, bc I have done it before (return then buy something with that money). My mother in law says she thinks I'll win my case, but I dont know.
I am wanting to do a counterclaim on Wal Mart for being treated so poorly, made fun of, wa called a "horrible mother", and the police officer whom harassed me. Am I wrong for forgetting? I even had the money to pay for the things! And all they have on the cams are showing me putting some items back on the shelves in the cleaning products isle that I decided I didnt want to get. They have no other videos of me stuffing anything into my bag or anything else. Ugh I am just so upset. I feel confident that I will win, but something needs to be done about this crap. Being falsely accused is a crime and they need to be punished, not me. I aM INNOCENT as innocent can get..
