I had worked for Wal-mart for almost 13 years. When I transferred to the Wal-mart in Thatcher, AZ in I started out as a floor associate. Whereas, in the store I came from, I was a Department Manager since their store opened in 1989.
When I talked to the store manager in Thatcher before I transferred, he told me that when an opening came up for a Dept. Manager position, that he would put me in that position. But come to find out, when there was a position open in the Housewares Dept. He put a male in that position because he told me that there was a lot of heavy lifting and that it would be better for a male associate.
I thought that to be unfair. I also told him that I was required to work only the dayshift hours because I was restricted to driving daylight hours only and that I also had a doctors slip stating that in my work file. He told me he couldn't put me to day shifts. He also said that if he would have known about my vision problem, that he would have never accepted by transfer. I also thought that to be unfair and discriminatory. Finally, when I started to complain about his actions, he put me in a Department Manager position.
The assistant manager started harrassing me and was always telling me that I couldn't leave work until I had everything done in my dept. I was basicallly the only one doing anything during the daytime and she still kept telling me I had to stay until all my work was finished. I told her that I had to leave before it got dark outside and she told me that I couldn't go and threatened to write me up if I did.
She also embarrassd me in front of the whole store when we had our morning meetings. She had told me that when the vice-president of Wal-mart came and toured our store, that my dept. Looked like sh*! She had said that in front of everybody. I couldn't help it. I wasn't even at work the day before the visit due to a doctor's appoint.
I didn't even get a chance to organize my dept. There was a floor associate who worked for me the day before and the night stockers messed the dept up when they stocked freight. They were putting freight in places that they shouldn't have, and when I came in the morning of the visit, I didn't even have time to fix the problems becuase the visitors came in early. She called me into the office when I was getting off work and said she was writing me up and if I didn't sign the paper, that she was going to fire me.
I told her that I had never got written up before and that you're supposed to have 3 write-ups before they give you a decision making day (as they called it) I told her that I didn't think that was right for her to write me up and said I wasn't signing anything. I told her that I had to talk to somebody before I signed anything. From that day, she never again said anything about the write-up.
I'm glad that I quit Wal-Mart because if I didn't I know they would have fired me. I didn't quit becuase of that, of course. I quit because of my vision problem. But at the Wal-mart I worked at before, they treated me with respect. I appreciate that. The Wal-mart
in Thatcher is now a SuperCenter and is now in Safford, AZ. They have a new manager now. Thank God for that.
