Consumer Report

We purchased a new KIA Forte on Dec 22. It was a 2010 model. At 4000 miles we asked the dealership to check it because we could smell anti-freeze in the cabin, and see a film on the windshield. They said there was no problem at that time. At all of the subsequent oil changes, they never found a problem. We continued to have the same film and smell. On March 7 we brought the car into a local repair shop, Andy's Pro Tire and Repair, which we have used for many years. He was to do a tune-up. He found an anti-freeze leak, so I took it to KIA in St Cloud, MN where we purchased it. Joe Williams, a mechanic there, told me the part that was leaking was being corroded by the anti-freeze and would be replaced by an up-graded one. I asked why we would have to pay for this if we noticed a problem back at 4000 miles, and the part was not good enough in the first place. The car then had 77,000 miles on it, so we knew it was not under warranty. But it seemed to us to be an original part issue, not a repair issue. They want to charge approximately $400.00 to repair this. I called and asked the general manager and he asked his head mechanic, Lucas, to handle it. Lucas said that "parts are up-graded all the time", and that they would not cover the cost of this repair.
