My water pump went out on my Discovery II. I had it towed to the nearest Land rover dealership, (Land Rover of Dallas). The estimate to repair the water pump was around $500. I said fix it. The following day the service dept. Called to let me know there where other problems that need fixing. The most serious was the head gasket.
The service rep. Explained that the gasket was blown and was leaking water at all four corners of the head. I drove over to see. After my arrival the mechanic and I examined the head but I didn't find any water leaking. We started the motor and let it run a bit, as long as we could, the water pump had not yet been replaced. I told them to fix just the water pump.
The following day the same rep.informed me the head gasket had to be replaced and the cost would be $3600.00 to $4000.00. He said the head was leaking more water than from the water pump itself. I said no again to the head gasket repair and to fix only the pump.
Latter that day I got another call from the dealership. They said they would not repair the water pump only. I told them I'd have the truck repaired elsewhere.
A local repair shop near my home said they could get the water pump from that same dealership and fix it for $360.00. And so, they did. I told the story and advised them to watch for a head gasket leak. The repair shop didn't find any water leaks nor a blown head gasket.
My wife and I have put seventy thousand miles on that vehicle after that repair five years ago. We never did replaced the head gasket or any work to the motor. Other things have gone wrong but we wont be getting estimates for repair or making repair at Land Rover of Dallas.
And the owner, well... He has other dealerships here in Texas. Be careful.
