Sears aka home of "junk central" air conditioner is the ripoff business that doesn't give a dam. Chicago, Illinois

Purchase new central heat and air from Sears in 1998. So far we haven't had any major problems with the heating system, but the AC is another story all together.

I will try to state the barest of facts here. But please keep in mind that I live in KY where the temperature sometimes rises to 100 degrees and 100 per cent humidity. Each summer there are several heat related deaths in the area

Purchase lovely older home, our dream house, but no heating or cooling systems at all. Call Sears 800 number and inquired about systems, a salesman was at my door before dark with contract in hand. After listening to sales pitch, I said I want the best one you have (keep in mind that it's June in KY and I'm hot. OK he says I will have a installer here tomorrow.

Tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes, finally after about a week a installer shows up. He ran a little duct work and says he has to go back to his shop for something. That was the last we saw of him for three weeks. Now it is July in KY, and it's hot! Finally the big day arrives, we have central air conditioning.

Second problem: Summer 1999, try to turn on AC for first time of season, runs for about 5 minutes and blows fuses faster than we can screw them in. Call for service, after a wait of two weeks, a service man finally shows up, it's your compressor he says. Is that covered by warranty, sure but not labor. But for about $200.00 we have AC again and think all of our problems are over. WRONG

Third problem: Summer try to turn AC on for first time of season. It works, can this be true? No, a few days later it's out again. Call for service, about two weeks later it is finally repaired. Did I mention that it gets hot in KY?

Fourth problem: Summer of the biggest problem yet. Call for service in April, still without AC in June. I check my contract, all I see is "satisfaction guarnatted", almost to hot to think straight. Finally after many phone calls I find out that the part for my unit is the compressor motor (again) and since this unit is now three years old that part it no longer available, so my service request has been cancelled.

Well after saying a few things that a southern lady normally wouldn't say, a service person shows up a few days later and installs another new motor. I inspect the unit and realize that the screws on top don't seem to fit just right, but it's working and my house is starting to cool. Surely nothing else will happen. WRONG

Fifth problem: you guessed it Summer of 2002. May 5 try to use AC for first time of season. No good, I sit before this computer late at night, who can sleep in this heat, the temperature was only in the lower 80's but is sure is humid. So far I have been hung up on by three different Sears reps. I have to talk to about 10 people with every phone call and tell this whole story, so they will know how to direct by call, I tell them I know who i want to talk to, but that would just be to easy, also what chance would they have to disconnect me.

Finally, Mark Doyle, says to me, I'm on your side, what can we do to fix this. Yeah right. Anyway after much discussion I feel I have forced Sears into replacing the piece of junk in my back yard. But Doyle keeps referring to the agreement with Sears, and I tell him that I have not reached any agreement with any body. But he says that the part for my AC is in stock now (another condensor motor) I wonder where that part was 25 days ago.

To wrap up this long tale, Sears wants to come to my house, replace the condensor motor and at later date, bring me my new unit, do you see where this is headed? I said in no uncertain terms that that was not acceptable, the old unit can be repaired when the new unit is in my yard. He has the nerve to say to me that we should have a certain level of trust by this time. Trust, sure like I trust a Water Mosiccan snake. He kept saying that Sears would be in touch with me. Give me names and phone numbers of the "sears" person. Unfortunely about that time he hung up on me.

Consumer beware: Sears plans to sell this unit to some unsupecting person, please don't let it be you. I did say that it was hot here, didn't I?
