Ripoff evil company refused payments now suing me

I had an AT&T Universal Card for ten years with no problems and always made my payments. Then last year I lost my job and was unable to find a new one for several months.in that time I got behind on all of my credit card payments. When I did get a job, It only paid half of what I used to make. I contacted all of the credit card companies and told them that I had a job, and ask for help in getting caught up on my payments.

They all did, except for Universal Card, which is now owned by Citibank. They told me if I couldn't pay the minimum payment, then don't pay anything. They said if I mailed in a smaller payment they would keep the money, but it would not be applied to my account. I ask to speak to a manager and they refused to let me. After calling them several times, I finally got someone that wanted to help. She said that I qualified for a special payment plan that lasted for one year. This was similar to what the other companies had done. I agreed to the terms and she took my information and said she she would set it up, and I would make my payments over the phone each month. She set my payment date at the 15th.

When I called to make a payment, I was told the plan had been canceled, but was given no reason as to why. Then they demanded the full amount of the debt. When I told them that I didn't have that much money, they sent it to a collection agency who was very rude and made alot of stupid threats. I sent them a letter and ask them to stop calling me. Then I got a letter from a lawyer who is a debt collector demanding even more money. I sent her a letter asking for an explaination of the charges and a copy of the original contract with Universal Card. She did not respond, instead she filed a law suit against me for even more money. She is trying to garnish my wages and seize my bank account. She is also putting a lien against my property. If they would just let me make monthly payments they would get their money and I can get my life back on track. If anybody can help, please let me know.
