This trip was the roughest trip I have had in my 25 years at Amtrak and their have been trips.
I do my best to be a good employee, to serve the passengers needs to the best of my ability and not ask much. This weeks trips started out just like any other, greeted my coworkers and passengers and set out to have a great trip as I do each and every trip.
A few hours into our trip a man decided to take his life by laying his head across the tracks. Our train at 70 mph could not stop in time killed him and spread his body across a quarter of a mile in front of my employee sleeper window and perhaps other passengers windows. I saw a mans body parts shoot across a field in front of me as I stood there in shock as the train went into emergency to a immediately halt. It was quick and fast and not sure others saw and or witnessed what I witnessed.
In my 25 years I have seen my share of incidents, but today I just was not prepared to see a man take his own life out side my plexiglass window.
As a tear fell and I prayed for what ever family he has or had that he will never see again, i thanked god for the family that i have and knowing that I have a home and a family that that is a back bone behind everything I do.
The sickening part of the whole ordeal is the lack of concern from Amtrak management. Through this entire ordeal (Body parts flying in front of my window, blood, guts, arms, (a head) the crunching of bones under the train) the only text from my boss in NYC was:
I forgot to pick up a damn manifest before i left the office the day before
As this train manager sits in his New York air conditioned office - i wonder (W T F) is in his mind. Does he have any clue what his employees or employee witnessed or how it effects them or how it impacts his work flow with his passengers.
I still see the arms and legs and hear the crunching of bones in my head but what stick out more then anything is this managers stupid text to me reminding me to pick up a manifest before I left the New York office
From his NYC office I pray he never has to see body parts flying in front or across his desk.
I wish i could mention his name or leave my name at the end of this blog.
But Amtrak is a funny cookie
People they like - they treat like gold. People they dont like - i guess the text reminding them to pick up manifests.
