I've had Direct TV for over 6 years. When I first signed up, they said the local channels in my area would be available in HD after the first of the upcoming year. I'm still waiting. All the cable companies in the area, as well as Dish Network have been broadcasting the local channels in HD for several years. Direct TV just doesn't want to pay the price the locals are getting from other providers.
Also, I purchased a HDDVR from Direct TV about 3 years ago. I was told that the equipment would belong to me and that I should take out the warranty service for $6 per month since I owned the equipment and that it would be replaced if something went wrong. I finally decided to go with Dish Network and had it installed yesterday. I called Direct TV to cancel my service and was told to send back all the old boxes including the HDDVR.
I told them that I owned the HDDVR and they said that it was a lease and if I didn't return it, I would be billed the difference. They tried to say that the cost of the HDDVR was $700 when I purchased it and that I had only paid $250 for it. (I could have bought the same box from Best Buy at the time for $299. I have found that Direct TV will nickel and dime you to death.
They are a big rip off and as far as I'm concerned, they are practicing legalize stealing. They tell you one thing on the phone, then deny it years later. I would encourage anyone thinking about signing up with Direct TV to not do so. I would also encourage anyone that current has Direct TV to drop it. Personally, I would go back to using "rabbit ears" before I would ever sign up with Direct TV again. What crooks!!!
