My son shipped a computer via USPS for repairs in May. It never arrived at its destination.in July he began the long process of attempting to collect on his insurance claim. He was given delay after delay. I finally got involved as he works fulltime and is unable to do the necessary tracking of this case.
After several written contacts, the box with the computer inside was returned to him at the his post office in January three months after the warranty had expired for service on the laptop. The USPS refuses to pay.
After appealing to the Consumer Affairs Office of the United States Post Office, we were told that Express Mail is a "postage guaranteed service." They "deliver by the time that we promise or refund your postage. Express Mail Service does provide for insurance against loss or damage, but your claim is for loss due to delay in deliver of the article.
This type of loss is considered consequential in nature, and is not covered by the insurance policy we offer for Express Mail Service. For this reason your claim cannot be approved for payment. This office is the final level of postal authority concerning claim's appeal." The letter was signed Debra Fuller, Domestic Claim Appeal Specialist.
So my son used a service he trusted to get his laptop to its destination, insured the package thinking that's just what he was getting... insurance... And almost a year later finds out that is insurance is not the purpose of insurance??? So he gets a broken computer back from the USPS after the warranty has expired. What good is a 6 month-old laptop that doesn't work a year later? And who is at fault here? Our trusted USPS service. Folks, perhaps you ought to ask them to DEFINE insurance the next time you purchase it, or use another mailing and shipping service.
