U.S. Postal Service
Stolen/Lost Packages

On 8/12, I walked into the Shaker Heights, Cleveland, Ohio with two boxes to mail to my home address in Miami, Florida. I had been working in Cleveland, Ohio for two months and had shopped quite a bit. I could not take the stuff I had purchase with me on the plane due to the fact weight requirements for luggage. I travel a lot with work and have utilized the Postal Service in the past to shipped things home. I did not have a return address to place on the box so I just wrote my name, the hotel name and the city and state. The two boxes were being mailed to my home address which I clearly indicated on each box. I addressed them to me at my home address in Miami, Florida. I had them shipped non priority mail as it was too expensive to send the priority or Express. I insured both boxes, the smaller for $200.00 and the larger for $500.00. The amount that I insured them for was far less that the value of the items contained in the larger box.

In the larger box was three brand new Coach Purses, and several other valuable items. The smaller box was delivered according to scheduled time, however the larger box was never delivered. I called the phone number provided on my receipt (1-800-275-8777) to report that I had not received the box. I provided the tracking number and was issued a case number and told someone would call be back in two days. I did not receive a call back. I continued to call every week as a means of follow up and each time was given a case number and told I would receive a call back, it never happened. After six weeks of calling and getting no results, I call the Postal Service Consumer Affairs Department and explained to the what was happening. I was then told to wait a few days to see if by chance the box went back to the hotel as the computer reflected that the address was not clear and therefore the package was undeliverable.

I called the Hotel and they did not have it. I call the Post Office that I mailed it from and they did not have it. I continued to call the Postal Service Consumer Affairs in hopes that they would at least make efforts to locate my box and was told to file the insurance claim, which I did. On Oct. 3, two weeks after filing the insurance claim, I received a letter denying my claim and stated that my claim was denied because the mail did not bear the complete name and addresses of the mailer and addressee or is undeliverable as addressed. I am appealing their decision, based on the fact that I personally walked those two boxes into the post office and if they were not properly packaged and addressed, I should have been informed by the Postal Clerk and my box should have been rejected. Not only did I pay to shipped them, I purchased the insurance and paid for confirmation of delivery. After receiving the denial letter, I again called the Postal Consumer Affairs Department to try and find out what else could be done in locating my box and was told nothing could be done and that I should appeal the insurance decision because they had no idea where my box is. I asked what happens to mail that cannot be delivered and was told that it would end up at the Mail Recovery Department in Atlanta, Ga.

They could not provide a contact number to me for that department so I searched it on the internet and came up with the number, which I called. I was told by the Mail Recovery Department that they had not received it. The Rep further indicated to me that if the address was the problem, that the Post Office should have been able to correct that problem by merely looking up the name and correct address in their computer system. She indicated that the correct addresses are in the Postal Service computers, so she strongly believe that the box was stolen and that I should call the Consumer Affair Department and speak with a manager, who would hopefully assign someone to try and locate my box. I did as suggested and was told by them, that there was nothing they could do. I called again today, October 4 and was told by a Customer Service Rep that my case was closed and I should just file an appeal and try and get the insurance money for my lost.

I am amazed with the run around that I have been getting from the Postal Service with no positive results.in dealing with the Postal Service, I have only received no help, but a attitude of its not our problem, so its just your lost. I hope that you can help me, I have no other options. I will never utilized the Postal Service again to ship anything, I will pay FEDX more money to ship for me, since the tracking number that they provide really works and they are able to keep track of your package. The tracking number provided by the Post Office is useless because they cannot track your package and could care less if it gets lost. Please help me find my package. The items in the box are quite valuable and also were gifts that I had purchased for my Daughters and grandchildren. Please Help.
