I was hired as a cashier for Walmart in Berlin New Hampshire On March 30. There motto is The customer must always win! And I was trained on a honor system about the customer Re; How many do you have?
Back in April a customer placed 2 boxes of bullets on the counter and said he had so many of this one and so many of that one. Following my training I entered those numbers in my register. A few days later I was called into the office by an assistiant manager and our head CSM (customer service manager). They asked me if I recalled a man and bullets yes I said and then they told me that I didn't properly do my job and that he had more than what he told me so I lost the company over $400.00 in sales. They said they had viewed the tape and he had more than what he said. So I had to sign an e-mail on the computer. They sent it to corp HQ. The more I thought about it the more i was in awe as to why they would even check on this because I was a good cashier. They said they could zoom in his cart and counted the bullets. I believed them I also warned all of the other cashiers about this customer I recalled that he had a scorpion tattoo on his hand. Wouldn't you know it a few days later he was back and tried to do the same thing to another cashier but he was caught because of my warnings not by managment but by me!
Now back in Nov I helped walmart catch two people that stole over 10,000 worth of computers. We have a person that is supposed to watch the tapes and catch the shop lifters. However she is always in the break room smoking or walking around the store. Any way back to nov of 08 I was going to my break when I noticed a cart full of bagged xmas items all by itself near one of the far end registers Which I thought was odd. So I walked back and got a CSM and brought her to the cart she in turn brought it to the service desk waiting for someone to claim it no one ever did.
We reported it to the AP (loss prevention) she did her job because she was told the time and date by me and on tape was the woman in the book nook packing all of the items in bags. This did not stop the shop lifters from coming back they continued to steal. Every time they would come in I would tell her or someone. Do you think I got any credit for this? NO I did not she took all of the credit.in fact when they were arrested and their picture appeared on the front page she asked me if they were the people that stole everything...
I was a little upset when everyone was giving her High 5's as I sat in the background watching all of her glory... I did mention to a few co-workers that I should of gotten a Thank you it least.
Then lo and behold I get pulled in the office for the bullets. My gut tells me she set me up to try and get rid of me because of my saying I did her job. This wasn't the only time I had giving her info on shop lifters either.
Now while I still had my job a few weeks ago a customer gave me a ten dollar bill and insisted that he gave me a $20.00 The manager checked the tape and told him he had given me a $10.00, during this I found out that the camera's are not what they claim to be because he couldn't tell what bill it was they only knew by what slot I put the ten in! And they checked my 10 slot to make sure I hadn't been giving a $20.00 bill. So please tell me How in the heck can you count bullets in a cart if the camera overhead my register can't see what the bill is?
Not to toot my own horn but for peace of mind I have to do something. Once again I was on break and I noticed a customer with a cart full of watermellon and I noticed some items stuck in between the watermellons I talked to my CSM and told them. They went to a cashier and she did exactly what I did took the customers word for how many do you have? And they got away with what ever they had. The Csm watched them walk out the door. And once again I told ap Loss prevetion the time what register and told my assistiant manager and asked if I got in trouble then why wasn't this cashier in trouble? The next day the customer came back this time they had a cart full of bread and handed the cashier one loaf and said I have 10 well finally a CSM spotted them came over and said I'll help you with the bread and stuck between the bread was over $35.00 worth of lobster. They were so nervous one left the store and the other couldn't slid his debit card. Once again I get no Good job...
Now To my firing On June 29. I was on register 13 which sells cigarettes. 9 times out of ten I card people. I have carded so many people that I often got "I love you" from the customer because they hadn't been carded in so long. I have refused sales because of expired ID's. I was covering a lunch break it was very busy and this one shopper bought something stupid and asked for a pack of marb blend 27's I asked her for the ID and she said it was in the car asked her how old she was 21 she says and birthdate. Punched it in the register and told her next time please bring in your ID. Right after that I got this gut feeling that I was set up. I was so right. I went over to the service desk and there she was with a manager asking my name. I pointed at her and said you set me up now I'm going to lose my job my manager said I wouldn't that the report said our store failed and that the cashier was just supposed to re train on the CBL'S (Computer based Learning)
For me not to worry about my job. Ya right... The secret shopper said that she would put in the report that I did hesitate before selling her the cigarettes... I had the next 2 days off and when I went to work on the 29th after being on register for 10 min they replaced me and called me into the office and fired me on the spot. Took my discount card my badge escorted me to my locker to clean it out and escorted me out of Walmart... I did all I could to keep my composer. They told me to come back the next day to get what ever vacation time or personal days and check and to sign termanation papers. As of writting I haven't gone back yet...
Now I must explain walmarts coaching system to you. Sounds like a good thing huh? But it isn't. When you do something wrong first is a verbal second is a written and the third is supposed to be what they call a "D" Day decision day. They send you home with pay and have you write a letter as to what you did wrong and why you want to keep your job. I didn't get the "d" day..
I had messed upon some wic vouchers and the bullets this should of been my D day but wasn't...
I am a good cashier to my customers and I helped save the company money. However this wasn't written down anywhere. Not to mention that I asked to be taken off of cash and put some place else in the store because of me 2 coachings and they didn't do that because it would effect their score card up front...
If I gain nothing from this letter I am just happy to be able to toot my own horn for my own piece of mind...
By the way legal age to buy cigarettes is 18.. Walmart states under 40...
