I was an independent media contractor for Modern Media for one year. They were very nice while I was employed and I did enjoy my work while there; however, when I could no longer work for them, they stiffed me on my last check, which amounted to over $500.
It's really pathetic that employers can be so irresponsible and childish. I have repeatedly asked for my final payment and for them to return a photograph and they have not complied. They also lied to me and said they would pay me as soon as I returned some items they needed. Now that the items were returned, they said they cannot pay me because they have no "cash flow".
I plan on taking them to small claims court and writing letters to the Better Business Bureau, the District Attorney, California Attorney General's office and the U.S. Labor Board.
It's not about the money; it's about the lack of professionalism in an industry that I so cherish: media.
