Protect America
Scam, ripoff, bad service

I was contacted by phone by a Protect America sales rep. She said that I would receive free home security equipment if I signed a 2 year contract. Plus it would cost about $30/month to have my home monitored 24/7. I got the equipment in a decent amount of time and it was easy to set up. On the initial phone contact, I told the rep I would be moving in about 6-8 months and would inform them when I actually changed residences and to ship everything right now to my current address. I supplied the new address at this time so it would be easier to switch over, so I thought. I also was supposed to get yard signs and window stickers, but they never arrived. So I called them to see where the stickers and signs were. They said I wouldn't get them until I moved. I then requested they ship them now so I could use them ASAP. They finally agreed to do so.
I waited a few weeks for the shipment to arrive. It never did. So I called them to see what happened. They said the shipment already went out a few weeks back. I then asked what address did they ship the items to and they told me the address of the house I was going to be moving into. (I had no mail service set up there yet.) I again told them again that I would not be moving for some time and that I would inform them when I would be permanently living at my new address and to send the items to my current address. I finally got them after over a month's waiting.
Then some time down the road, something tripped my alarm system while I was away. They sent the police to my new residence - the wrong location. There were construction workers at the new homesite who said everything was OK there. I heard about this incident from the construction workers even before the company itself who was supposed to call my alternate numbers and never did.
My contract was supposed to be up June 30. I thought late April/early May '07 was ample time to give notice that I wanted to cancel services on the due date. They then told me I needed to give at least 90 days notice in order to cancel, so I was stuck with another year. Nowhere in the few pieces of paperwork did I see that there was at least a 90 day cancellation notice.
In the meantime, my alarm unit siren stopped working when I tested it. I called the company again asking about a replacement. They told me it would be $250 per unit. Forget it!!! I could get one much cheaper elsewhere!!!
Fair warning: Don't even consider this company. Their customer service people don't even know how to follow basic requests or directions. Very poor service when the police are sent to a location 15 miles away from the possible scene of a crime. Thank goodness there was no crime.
