I was looking for a better deal on satellite TV. DirecTV offered a good package and sent someone to install it. The following day I lost my job and needed to cancel. I phoned and spoke to a 'customer service specialist,' who told me I was well inside the 7 day cancellation window and that, as long as the equipment came back, no early cancellation fee would apply and I would owe nothing. I confirmed this with that person two and three times. Then I looked at my credit card statement and was shocked to find a $465 fee from Directv.
I contacted Directv customer service and heard 'sorry we can't help you.'
I went higher up the customer service chain and heard 'sorry, YOU broke your contractual obligation by signing a two-year agreement and then cancelling 3 days later.'
In several emails and calls I described what their own representative had said about the 7 day opt-out period. They answered that it made no difference and that I had nothing to prove it.
I also contacted the Better Business Bureau.
It went the same way, nothing was done, and the fee stayed.
So I paid $465 for 2 days of Directv, and I will never leave Dish Network again, since they came back with a far better package at an almost unbelievable price.
