Hired me full-time, gave me schedule of hours, then told not to come in now

I substitute teach during the school year, but needed a job to supplement my income. I applied at Jump Oil (Ice House) telling them I needed full-time work now and continuing through the school year. I could work afternnoons and evenings and week-ends during school, and in the summer (when I applied) any hours that they needed me. They hired me, said that I could have as many hours as I wanted now because they needed help. I worked for three days. I had one day off, and was scheduled to go in the next day (I have my written schedule), I got a call from the supervisor telling me that they had an overload of employees right now and that I did not have to come in for a few days. They would call me. I thought that was odd and called back to ask if I had dome something wrong. "Oh, no, " I was told, but I was the last to be hired, so they needed to cut back. I thought that was odd too, because the day i was hired, they said they needed so much help.

I asked if I was fired, and told again, "oh, no." I asked if I was laid off, and she said, well, I suppose. I told them that I had not worked that kind of register, but they said not to worry they would train me. There was very little training, but I managed pretty well, made a few mistakes, but asked for help. I cleaned, refilled coffee machines, and kept busy. I was yold they wanted to train me to close at night. I did ask if there was any security on this long stretched of unpopulated road. They told there was an old couple living across the street that could see the station. When they told me to fill a shopping cart with about five cases of beer and roll it to the other end of the store to stock the cooler, I asked someone to guide the front since it was stacked very high and heavy to push. One employee told me that usually do this themselves. I got the feeling that they thought that I was too old to do all of the manual labor they wanted me to do. They have one employee that has been with the company for years, but she did no heavy lifting, only wiping counters or sweeping. I got another call from the supervisor telling that I may have misunderstood that she was only hiring PRN (as needed). When I said that I understood I could have as many hours as I needed, she said she was sorry she was not more clear. She then said that if I wanted to quit so that I could look for another job, that would be okay. I got the feeling that she wanted me to quit so that I could not clain that I was not wanted there, or that she did not have to terminate me. I told that she could call me when she needed me, and that I would just report that i had been laid off. She said again it would be all right if wanted to quit. I did not do that, but haven't heard from them. I believe that they wanted younger people at this store, and also they asked why a teacher needed to work there. I thought that was odd. I only substitute teach at a rual school, and jobs are difficult to find. What do you think?
