My daughter graduated from college and moved a large metro area which is not served by US Cellular. She had a nation-wide plan but I was told by a phone representative that she had 3 months to change to a new phone service or the phone would be turned off since 50% of her phone calls needed to originate from her local area. I asked about the disconnect fee and was told that it would be waived since they couldn't give her service in her new location.
When she was at home over Thanksgivng she found a new phone company and had her phone service moved. We felt it was urgent to do this because the three months were about up. When I was checking about my own service I brought this topic up with the representative. She searched the documentation and could not find ANYTHING about this converstion under my daughter's number. She says that they will charge me the $150 disconnect fee because she saw no evidence that this conversation had occurred. When I protested, she said that as a good will gesture they would only charge me $75. I then spoke with her supervisor and was told the same thing. The supervisor suggested to me that I could send my daughter's used phone to the company and then they would waive the fee. I declined as she had a razor that she paid full price for when the phones first were available. What is really sad about this is that my daughter never wanted to change phone companies because she had excellent reception there, unlike some of her friends who have local phone companies. The supervisor told me that she had never heard of a phone being turned off because of too many calls out of the local area. I have been a loyal customer since 1998 and have four other lines with them. I guess that doesn't count for anything so I will be moving my phone service as soon as I can and will make sure that everyone that I know will find out how they rip a person off.
