Don't count on Sears to take responsibility for their damage

Funny how things change! In Sept. 2006 I was urging people to buy at Sears because of the treatment they afforded their employees whose reserve units were activated. Now, in January I am warning people not to use this unscrupulous company.

It began in October when my refrigerator was being repaired. The contract repairman had an accident and burned four holes in the linoleum. Some girl I know only as "Shana" called from claims within about three weeks and agreed to send me a form to fill out and send back with a cost estimate. So far, so good.

So began the saga. I have called her at least five times (which Sears makes an excrutiating exercise by not providing a direct line). The first three she said she would or had sent the forms. The fourth time she said she would send via UPS. The final time she said she would fax the form. I told her to give me a few minutes to hook up the fax and she replied she had to get my paperwork and would fax the form in ten minutes. I stood by for an hour and a half and when I called back I found out she had left the office. I guess she had a good laugh thinking of me standing by the fax.

It is now obvious that I will get no where with claims and I assume I will have to take Sears to Small Claims Court. What a shame. I tried to be calm about the 4 holes in the middle of my kitchen and even joked about it - after all, accidents happen. Because the damage was in my cabin and the linoleum had a few years on it I estimated the replacement cost on a lower middle grade product to be fair to Sears. Obviously they don't care about fair or what is right.

I have no doubt that Shana takes her marching orders from higher up but it does make one question how she sleeps at night or looks in the mirror. Oh well - in my old age I have come to believe in Karma so I'll leave it at that. Just be aware that Sears is not concerned about losing a 40 year patron over a $482 repair. Too bad - I love Craftsman tools. Move over Sears and hello snap-on!
