The business that doesn't give a damn

Hello, I had shipped a police lightbar (Whelen 8 strobe) via UPS. When I went to the customer dropoff counter, they NEVER questioned how the item was packaged. I felt that it was packaged sufficiently to sustain transit problems (or else I wouuld not have shipped it. The insurance coverage I had on the item was for $800.00 (replacement cost is $869.00-so my 800 figure was a "rough guess").

Anyway, upon arrival of the item it was damaged on the one end as if the package was DROPPED on the end very hard. A claim was filed the day the buyer notified me of the problem. UPS came to his residence and picked up the item notifyiing hm it was going back to UPS in NC for inspection.

3 days later, it arrives at my door, damaged even MORE than it was originally... I never asked for it to be returned to Cleveland in any way, shape or form. Once I called UPS back and asked them what was going on, they informed me that the claim was "denied" for improper packaging. I asked "Where are these policies?"... I was told it gives a "brief description of policies on the back of the shipping receipt". I had seen this on the back and notified them that I had followed everything it says on the back of the shipping receipt. I had informed them that I would be contacting the BBB or local news media for some "good publicity" on the issue of denying the claim, only because I had paid for coverage and packaged it accordingly.

Someone from UPS (Fontaine-Cleveland Claims Office) called me back within an hour or so, informing me that someone would be contacting me to set up an appointment to inspect it even further. The individual who came out (Mike) NEVER called to set up an appointment, he was in the area and figured he would drop by... in my opinion, this is not proper business practice... What if I was not home at the time?

Anyway, he is telling me that they probably won't pay the claim because of improper packaging...

So here I sit, with a damaged item, a buyer upset (as well as myself). The repair cost alone is in the amount of 780.00...

That is my rant for now, I will NEVER deal wth UPS again... Even if it was the ONLY shipping company in the world. I would drive the item there myself.

Thanks for listening.
Don R.
