We properly packaged and shipped a drum kit through UPS and paid for $1000 of insurance. The package arrived with 3 large holes and severe damage to the box. The drum was new 8 ply maple shell and arrived cracked the length of the drum. The box and contents had obviously been exposed to extreme conditions. When we reported the claim UPS told us to ship the item to Crawford so they could verify the damage. The drum was already ruined so we did not use the same packaging material as in the original shipment (bubble wrap, peanuts, and foam pads had been discarded). Crawford stated the drum was improperly packed and denied the claim. They then sent the drum back to its original location and UPS made us pay an additional $95.88 to have the drum re-shipped to us.
I contacted UPS and advised them that the packaging in the original shipment was within their guidelines and why we did not use the same packing material to ship the damaged drum. Additionally, I questioned why they lied to us when they said they were 'just verifying the item was damaged.' In review of their claim payment history, I was told by one store owner that they pay less than 20% of damage claims.in addition, I was told that UPS's lost items were often stolen during the shipping process and we all know who that would be.
I have sent letters to the Washington and Texas Insurance Commission and advised UPS of my action. They will not respond and continue to claim the items were not properly packaged.in review of their own packaging requirements I noted that our original packaging exceeded all their requirements. This is a scam and the insurance commission needs to investigate.
