Pat Parmelee is a landlady in Sioux City. I was leaving my deadbeat, mentally abusive husband and she said she would be nice enough to forgo the deposit and get me into one of her houses in exchange for me doing some work for her. Keep in mind I have three kids, one of whom was a baby at the time (almost a year ago). She showed me a house near where I was currently living where my kids would go to the same schools. Great! It also had four bedrooms. She showed me the identical house next door where her daughter was living with her grandchildren and how nice they had fixed it up. She said she was going to fix it up similarly.
I wasn't too worried about decor, but I was wondering about the kitchen floor, which was all broken, and she promised to fix it, and the front door, which was not long enough for the door frame - she said she was headed out "today" to Home Depot so she could get a new steel door, flooring for the kitchen and blinds for the windows. To make it easy for her to do this, I paid January rent. Understand that she had jerked me around on this house since November and because I had given verbal assurance that I wanted the house, with her repairs, I had to stay in the abusive home while she kept delaying the process.
She took the money for January rent, which was my son's SSI (and it's legal to use it for housing for him), then didn't have any other work done for three days. I know this because she didn't lock the back door and I went in there several times, showing others the house. On the fourth day I walked past and saw that she had moved a side door to the front door - technically it fit and that was okay - but she had moved the short door to the side where it didn't fit and had COVERED THE DOOR AND FRAME WITH PLASTIC. This was January in Iowa, I had three children and a small budget with which to pay the heating bill in what is already a big old house.
I left her a message saying, "Very funny - I need to look for a new house; I need my money back if you're not going to use it to do what you said you were going to do."
After awhile she quit picking up her phone even though, desperate for money, I continued calling her, trying to placate her and saying I'd accept a partial refund.
Now she's disconnected her cell phone and is unreachable. She's a greedy b*th who would rip off a mom and three kids escaping an abusive situation.
