Brought my 2000 Saturn in to Island tire to determine the cause and repair a clicking noise from the out side of the engine. I was told by the service writer that the mechanic reported that the water pump was loose and ready to fall off and that a new water pump is required. Based on this info which was suspicious to me, I went to look at the situation to find that the water pump had already been removed and the neew pump ordered.
If the original pump was loose it would break the seal and leak out the coolant very quickly. There was no coolant leak. One must conclude that the belt pulley mounted to the pump was loose. The only work required would be to re-tighten the pulley which could not be more than a 30 minute job.instead they chose to replace the pump that was in like new condition. I sent the pump back to the facility in North Carolina to bench test my original pump and no deficiency was found.
