I have been a customer with Extra Space Storage for nearly two years. During this time, they have raised the rates on metwice without any type of prior notification. Because of this, the new rates did not match what i had budgeted for payment for the year, and I fell behind in payments. During this time, they placed a special red lock on my unit and i wasn't able to access my unit for several months, even after the payment dispute had been resolved. Several times, I requested that they remove the addditional lock, but eight months later, THIS LOCK IS STILL ON MY UNIT. For the past eight months, I have been making regular payments through their online system, but their RED lock remains on my unit. I have tried to stop by the location twice in the past few months (I work long hours and the unit is far from where I work), and both times, I was prevented from accessing my unit by Extra Space Storage staff - once, because the manager was "out for lunch" - for THREE hours, and just today, because I didt not have my "ID" on me and was not allowed to enter the building. Furthermore, they changed the actual (green) locks on my unit six months ago, didn't notify me of htis until last week, and just LAST WEEK (may 17th) mailed me the keys to the "new" lock they had decided to place on it six monhths ago. The red lock remains, and i am unable to access any of my things. I refuse to pay this month's rent because, WHILE i HAVE BEEN PAYING ON TIME EVERY MONTH SINCE NOVEMBER, I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO ACCESS MY UNIT SINCE FALL OF 2010 BECAUSE OF THEIR INCOMPETENCE, inability to do things on time, and generally shoddy business practicess.
