I just saw another complaint listing the same practice, so this must be a normal practice - don't be fooled! Extra Space advertised a low rate for a storage unit, I moved in, signed the paperwork and all was fine (after they "inadvertently" tried to charge me for insurance I hadn't opted for the first month.) 5 months into my agreement, I get a notice in the mail that they are arbitrarily raising my monthly rate next month. Now I am stuck paying a higher-than-market rate at a below-average facility or having to move all of my stuff again after only 5 months.
I will never use Extra Space again - don't be fooled into their scam like I was!
