I was given an MCI cellular phone as a gift from my wife. I was not billed for the phone for 3 months. When I did get a bill I did not understand it. I could not get through to MCI WorldCom So I began to write them a series of Certified Letters. I think everyone reading should know that it is important to establish a paper trail. Now nearly every problem I have read here I have had as well. One of two things are going on here with MCI. 1.) They are just flat out incompetent. 2.) They are planning to sell off their business (or file as bankrupt) and they are trying to raise as much capital as possible in order to make MCI look more attractive to potential buyers or to cash in for their share holders.
A series of steps can get the company on its toes. First Dont send in any more payments. Especially if you think that you are paid up. Either way dont send them anymore money. They wont be dumb enough to place it on your credit if you have a history of Certified letters to them. If they do place it on your credit send copies of the certified letters to the credit beauru and request it be removed. Send all correspondence and so on. The credit reporting agency will wipe it off. You are entitled to 10 -15 thousand dollars for false reporting.
Secondly call your local congress man. Your congressman can bring immediate attention to this. They want your vote and will address this situation promptly. I have dealt with several companies in this way. It is intensely effective. All you do is make the report to the congressman and then you are on your way. They will take over the situation and update you constantly on efforts that they are making on your behalf. It will also hurt them if they are really looking to try to go out by filing in as bankrupt.
Finally contact your local utilites commission. The more complaints this company has against the better it will be to take them to court. Once a formal complaint is sent through if the company does not remedy the situation immediately or respond then you are entitled to take them to court. Take them locally. Class action suits are not good in cases like this as the company ends up getting off the hook. They settle the case for everyone! Not just the claimants in the suit. If people dont know of the existence of the lawsuit they cannot collect and after a period of time the money goes back to MCI and they can never be sued again for that action. So individual cases will drive the company to its knees. But I think it is crucial that those of you out there unhappy... Just stop paying them. Dont give them a nickel.
