Purchased a Lite-On CD Burner drive from Best Buy with a manufacturer's mail in rebate for $30. Sent in the original sales reciept and cut the UPC out of the box. Several weeks later I get a postcard saying that they couldn't honor the rebate because the original UPC was not sent in.
I contacted them via email about the problem (rebatestatus.com), and just got a cookie-cutter email response stating that they couldn't honor the rebate because the original UPC was not sent. Like I didn't know that was their story already! Responded to this, but of course this time they never write back.
These mail-in-rebates that require an original UPC are a great opportunity for a scam. If they claim they didn't get the UPC, and you've already sent it, what else can you do? You can't send it again because, by definition, the "original upc" is a one of a kind item and can't be re-sent. Isn't there any agency or body that looks over these rebates and can handle these situations?
