Windows 7 Upgrade failure for HP Pavilion Laptop - HP Pavillion elite

I purchased a HP Pavilion dv2 in July. The supplier refused to supply WinXP and I refused to use Win Vista after previous disastrous experiences. So instead, I installed the Win7 beta, certainly one of Microsoft's better creations if not the best WinNT release yet (I am qualified to judge having used Win Nt 3.1 since 1994 having refused to touch Win95, Win98 and other ghastly excuses for operating systems).

I was however assured that this purchase

Qualifies for a free upgrade to Windows 7.

Now Based at the University of Cape Town, I have been told on 3 different attempts contacting the support at HP, South Africa:

1. To obtain the disk by mail from Microsoft direct and pay, which I refuse to do
2. Go direct to nearest branch of Incredible Connection and they will hand me disk. Really?
3. That the option to upgrade expired earlier in February

Finally my details have been taken down twice by Complaints personal who have promised to reply to my request for a Win7 Upgrade. No one has come back to me...

My request is to tell me who to contact in HP Support here in Cape Town. I want a legitimate Win7 upgrade installed on this laptop; at this stage I have the option of installing linux but this obviates access to key Win32 applications in my research.

Phoning HP 3 times through this week, has taken an inordinate amount of time. Besides my contact phone numbers being recorded incorrectly, surname mispelt, they have failed to come back to me. Yet this was promised. When I obtained a direct number for HP HQ in South Africa, and was finally put through to the duty manager in Johannesburg, her PA informed me she had just gone out to lunch.

Right now I would be happiest with a refund on this laptop and I will purchase an IBM thinkpad; despite the higher price, at least it will come with a legitimate, reliable operating system.

I refuse to fork out ~R2400 to upgrade, over and above what I paid for this HP laptop! My negative experiences are the subject of widespread concern amongst colleagues and postgrad students who wince at the waste of time and unprofessional failure of HP's excuse for support and after sales backup. A proportion also own HO laptops and are also seriously reconsidering their purchases. I am deeply disappointed in lack of delivery on what should be a simple exercise in support, and not a ill mannered shambles of half truths, ineptitude and downright dishonesty that will force yet another customer firmly away from HP
