Recently, one of our ex-employees stole a car during his valet shift which was recovered and placed in police impound. Somehow EXPRO motors obtained a transfer for the car, towing from the HPD Impound Lot to their place of business on Highway 6. After calling Expro, my boss dispatched two drivers to the business with a check for $186 which an employee named Giovanni had said would secure its release. After being made to wait about for over an hour, the driver was told that he could not have the car without a release from the owner (even though Expro itself had not secured such a release).
My boss called again the next day and was told that $186 would be needed along with the owner’s release, so he dispatched two drivers (myself included) to pick up the car.
Arriving at 4 P.M., we had to wait over an hour until 5:15 P.M. When Giovanni returned from his “late lunch.” The business then produced a lengthy estimate showing $6500 worth of repairs to the vehicle, despite little apparent visible damage. Rejecting the outrageous repair estimate, we handed him the prepared check only to be presented a bill for an additional $400 including the towing fee and $169 “Administrative Fee.” In addition, they charged a $35/day “Storage Fee” plus a $20 “Impound Fee.”
Reluctantly, we handed him $586 cash the following Monday and was given the keys for the car. Taking it to a auto repair business on Ashcroft, Rodrigo’s, we were given an estimate for roughly $1500 even though we told the owner of the business to “be thorough” in his inspection.
We are protesting these outrageous and unauthorized charges that do not fall within the bounds of reason by any measure. We question Expro’s right to obtain this car and their extraordinary lack of customer service displayed when it became obvious that we would not sanction such exorbitant fees.
