Sallie Mae scamming co-signers

My daughter set up an automatic debit payment for her Sallie Mae loans in June in an amount approved and ok'd by Sallie Mae. She was told the past due amount on the loans would be put into deferment, and on July 7th, the first payment was debited from her bank account. On July 10th, her father (co-signer) received a letter from Sallie Mae saying the approved payment was not 'sufficient' and they demanded that he send payment on the past due amount or his credit rating would be negatively affected and possible court action would follow. My brother is an attorney, and he said he didn't believe it was legal for Sallie Mae to pursue payments from the co-signer when they are receiving approved payments from the principle borrower. We are getting constant phone calls from Sallie Mae as well as letters with threatening language.
