Midland Credit Management
Trying to collect on an account they no longer own

I had an overdue account with HSBC Card Services which they put in collections. Midland took the account into their services in '06'. They acknowledge that I had made a payment to them to start paying the bill off gradually.

On January 11 I received a letter from Cambece Law Firm saying that they had been retained to collect on the debt. The had taken over the account.

Again on September 28, the account was sold to Portfolio Recovery Services. At this time I was in a situation where I was able to pay the account off and was offered a pay-off amount at a fraction of what was owed.

I paid this bill by credit card on May 28 and funds were forwarded to Portfolio Recovery Associates on June 2. They sent me a letter stating that the bill was paid in full. I was told to retain the note for several months and I held on to it before discarding it last month.

In December, I received a letter from Midland again demanding the money that I owe them. I filed a dispute which they immediately disregarded with no explanation.

On January 22, I received another demand for payment from Midland. When I called to discuss the issue, they told me that my only recourse was to pay the bill. I called Portfolio Recovery Associates and they told me that Midland has no right to recover against me because they had sold the account and the account was satisfied. How do I get Midland to go AWAY!
