Late charges & finance fees have to be paid even though you don't owe them

I have had a Mastercard with BOA since early 2006 when it was transferred to them by MBNA. I have never been late with my payments and always paid the full amount of the bill each month.

In July because of being out of town and experiencing a very hectic time period, I made my payment online on the due date before 2:00pm. They already had the next date locked in as the payment date & it couldn't be changed. I made the full payment anyway and printed out the confirmation page showing the date & time that it was paid. Their statement clearly states that payments made before 5:00pm will be credited the same day.

When I got the August statement it included a late payment charge of $29. And a finance charge of $1.50. I tried many times to reach Customer Service by phone and online to no avail. The phone number listed on the statement is a recorded message of options but no option for talking to a representative. The online option for customer service also did not have an option for contacting anyone. I eventually had to write them a letter and included a copy of my confirmation page clearly showing the date & time paid. I had no other charges on my Aug. Statement so I ignored it.

The September statement also included additional late & finance charges. I paid only the amount of my actual charges, still expecting them to remove the fees. I haven't received my Oct. Statement yet but checked it online and found additional fees & charges. It appears that they have removed the original charges but continue to add more.in the meantime, I received a letter from them giving me (apparently) a secret phone number & code as to how to talk to the Customer Satisfaction Dept.

I called there this morning and was told that the only way to stop the late charges was to pay them and that would show up as a credit on my next statement. I told him that there wouldn't be anything to credit it against on my next statement. These are late fees on erroneous late fees that have since been removed. If they could manually remove the original charges, they should be able to remove the rest of them. Not so, according to him, "that is how the system works".
