The credit card that I used to have with this company was canceled in Feb. I paid it off in January. I waited three weeks and called (no charges were made after the payoff in January) and asked if any charges had been applied due to the balance that was on it in January. I was informed I had a zero balance, so I canceled the card. In August I received a notice, as well as statements from the payoff month through the July statement, saying that the account was going to collections.
My husband and I both called and talked with several people at Citibank, to find out not only why a canceled card was going to collections when we never received any notice of anything being charged to it until the collections notice, but also what could be done about the issue now. After going through several people and several call backs, we were finally informed that the day after I canceled the card, I was charged finance charges.
We agreed to pay the balance via phone, with the manager's promise that they would take care of that month's finance charge and ensure that no other charge was applied. When the payment went through, my husband called and made sure that the manager had actually followed up on the promise. It seemed that he followed through. My husband was promised a letter stating the card was paid in full. After we moved, it did take a bit for mail to catch up to us.
When it finally did catch up to us, instead of a letter stating the balance was paid in full and the card was canceled, we received another notice of collections. My phone number has never changed since arriving in California. The collection agencies began calling, yet Citibank never once called or mailed anything other than the notice of collections. I have gone through three collection agencies in the past year. Every time a new one contacts me, they tell me to put in a rebuttal. I do, then another one is assigned my account.
As of March 13th I was contacted by another agency and have sent them the same information that I sent the others. I also mailed the information and the same letter(s) to Citibank. Citibank's response was to send me copies of statements that were the same statements sent to me in 2006! The issue is still being sorted out, and the Citibank employees are extremely rude when we try to work things out with them.
But I am not going to pay off a credit card that I canceled and paid off twice already. Yet every year I am being asked to. This company needs to realize that their errors are not mine. I did what I feel I should have done, twice.
