My son opened a checking account with NCB because they are the only bank around here that gives a checking account with a debit card to under age children. Now I see why they do it. They must make a ton of $ on overdraft fees from these kids.
The method they are using is when my son would use his debit card at an atm, it doesn't automatically deduct from his balance. He randomly recieved a notice of overdraft fees and when we called to find out what caused it, they said it was from an atm withdrawal several weeks prior! How does a cash withdrawal not show up until the end of the month? So when he called in to check his balance, it said he had the money in the account and then a few weeks later, they deduct the withdrawal and slap an od fee on it!
I immediately had him close his account and he did. Now, 2 weeks later, he recieved an overdraft fee in the mail again! It says it is from some $9.62 purchase or something made several weeks ago and they are saying it just came in. Now they want my 17 year old son to pay them another $46. When he closed his account 2 weeks ago, we figured we couldn't fight a bank, so he just paid them $162 in overdraft fees so he could close the account and be done with it. Now they want $45 more. I don't know when it will stop. If they are doing this to all teenagers, they are making soo much $. Unfortunately, I have had adults telling me of the same type of problems with this bank though. I don't know because the bank I have my account at has never ever operated this way. My bank balance is immediately updated anytime I make any purchase with my card or atm withdrawal. How can the balance not automatically update when it is all computerized?
I really want to see something done about this and if there is anyone out there who can help, then go for it. I was prompted to submit this when I just read another complaint from Carmel, Indiana where our NCB location is.
